Haha absolutely no prob man, its always taking a chance asking where a fisherman caught his catch.More like a stupid question actually. I have my spots;). Lol that info does mix things up a lil as im really keen on getting them on a grinder outfit. Though the multiplier gents sure do make a strong argument.having had no luck with them its still a major learning curve for me. Nothing like getting the leeries.
I saw the fish you gents pulled, terrific fishing there man. and catch and release if i remember correctly. Big ups,being a C&R fisherman myself, love that man.let them swim

Think the Multi guys above have loads more experience in Yellowtail fishing though. And as I mentioned earlier, the average size over those weeekends was more in the 4 to 6kg class, so not exactly what you're targetting.

We released about 75% of the fish, I kept my three though :?. Love Yellowtail Curry!

lol ey man, nothing wrong with that, hell yellowtail curry sounds absolutely amazing right now.;).
Kicking off work to go spin, Thanks for the info man, decided upon taking both grinder and multiplier setups with on the next trip. lol if i lose one on the gosa with change setups::tight:

Nice fish there..Yeah My biggest fish on grinder was exactly the same as mine on multiplier. But the difference is how many smaller ones I have lost on the grinder! Now that I am comfortable casting and have a nice light balanced multiplier rig, I can fish with FAR less fatigue for a whole day. The ergonomics of pulling with the winch by your balls and your arm extended means you can sit into a fish and use your weight more effectively, with a grinder your arms are both extended and the rod up high, you have to pull with your back and arms and its harder to pump and wind.
My back gives me hell at the best of times and when I broke my rod last year at the end of season and brought out the 11ft and sustain 10000 as lovely as that reel is..after 2 sessions I packed it away and started looking for gallies with my surf rod. It was that uncomfortable to spin with compared to what I had gotten used to. I don't know how I did it for so long before. I still use the 10000 popping for stuff in the deep but I'm even using a baitcaster on the bass now, so no turning back!
But for real, my ratios from the rocks for the big fish are something like this grinder 1:15 out/lost and 0.55 mono and multiplier 10:1 out/lost, touch wood! There was also a steep learning curve to take into account so not as bad as it seems for the grinder but throw 4 fish lost in a row to braids no stretch and (wrong) hooks wearing a whole and pulling (wrong guage hook wire for size and forging as opposed to round wire can cut flesh). I have that happen very seldomly on the right 7/0 trebles with lighter guage and round wire and mono. I was loosing so many fish that I had to learn from my mistakes and copy the guys were weren't. I am still very much a novice but I know my way around the bar. There are guys (and ladies) that have forgotten more than we know collectively. This stuff is a fine art to some..

I am now thoroughly lost to the "penn" reel gang..

Those are valid points Dr Hoffman,

Watching those old Rooikrans videos i have no doubt that those ladies and gents plugging with there pen 49's knew more than may ever know. Those tannies could cast and pull fish, relentlessly at that. Those are 2 things that have definately come to mind as i have been thinking of ways to make the grinder setup work. Call its stubborn or unknowledgable, but i will continue to try with my currant setup. this being the case i am looking for every advantage i can. The hooks are something i have payed close attention to and am using bkk raptors at the moment, though they are a round wire hook the are pretty thick. may i ask what hooks you are using Dr hoffman? Also with regards to stretch of mono as apposed to braid, (something i have thought about alot)is there possibly any sort of ultra stretchy mono shock leader that may offer a little shock obsorbtion and stretch with only a 1 to 1,5 meter length? Alternatively i was thinking of some sort of casting bungee that could be connected to the leader, though this will almost certainly mess with casting distance?

Interesting one,
A lovely tail came out of East london this weekend, Amazing catch of a 12 kilo tail caught using an Sl30 13 ft blue marlin, 13kg mainline and 13 kg leader on whole sard in cold water conditions i would not of expected to produce tail.

And in the Hopes that this El page my come to life again here's one or two catches from the weekend.a few skipjack and 2 decent kob,one I took on light tackle in the estuary and one caught by my boet on his new torium. Both fish tagged and released.

;)Well , I must say for me , its been attrocious conditions for the last 18 months or so ...fished on n off but absolute no consistency as far as conditions go....BUT of late Ive started seeing things almost getting back to what i term normal , well fo my kinda fishing at any rate...

I was down at my local spot along the Jikeleza coast this past Sat n Sunday and the water looked really good and this coming weekend looks even better withe arly AM outgoing tides....::tight:

Hi Guys,

I will be in East London this weekend and staying in Gonubie. I actually grew up there so I am very familiar with the area. Furthermore I grew up surfing Gonubie and surrounds so I do know the spots very well. Some too well as I had a personal relationship with the reefs on way too many occasions. But I didnt fish them..

So I know that if I wanted to get into a nice elf now where to go and throw a plug here in the PE areas, but I dont know these spots in Gonubie.

I know all the spots in the sense of where they are. Gonubie Reef, The mouth, Main Beach, Rockbreak (Tidal Pool), Point, Barrier reef (thats what we called it the large gully Right of point) Black Rock, German Bay etc.

Any advise on spinning at these spots? Throwing plugs? Do the elf run at the point early morning? If throwing at the point is it better to cast right of the main break or do they frequent the deeper water where the surfers jump in? Black Rock Maybe? I usually start with some lures then switch to bait if no hits.

Just looking for some helpful input on an area I know very well from surfing, but never fished it.
