Ottah bay is the bay just before the beacon (and Saxon reef) - named after the Ottah which was wrecked there.  It is also known as Shark bay !!

Never too old to learn something – always though it was Otter (as in the animal) bay..

Shot @jenset!

Happy days, but I have to correct myself - the ship was called the Otto, I mis-spelt it.  And the name got corrupted over time to Otter bay.  Therre are loads of wrecks in that area, but most are on the Saxon itself.  I have found a bit of a wreck inside the right hand point, which may be the Otto.

Cheers,

Tony

i do not know the name of the spots., but were  we dived and found fish was to the left of the main beach, its the main beach on the way to the caves. I am sure someone might slip their 2c worth as per normal.

You Can pm Eckart, as i think he knows the area quite well.

Was up in Bredasdorp on business and went for a dive at the point off Arniston. Water was very flat and clean and the temp was warm 17dc but not much action. ended up getting a size cracker:fswim half way through the dive. near the end of huge seal gripped my fish and we played tug of war. I ended up winning ::Sand pulled the craker to my chest but the seal  charged me and started bitting my speargun trying to get the fish. After poking him with my spear he started to get very aggrisive and lmost had me for lunch^^...  In the end he had a nice fish for lunch as he gripped the cracker out of my hands and we played tug of war but this time he pulled so hard he snapped off my stringer and got the fish. Not 20min later he pulled up next to me asking for seconds!

@ Pelagic

Was there over the w-end for my first dive in Arniston & only saw 1 big zebra apon entering who scattered as i pulled my gun.. the water seemed full ov karenteen & mullet with the odd dassie.. the caves & ledges look very interesting.. but in the 1-2m vis I felt very frustrated...

Would that be struis point ?

Struis punt is the place for the cracker but just watch out as it is only divable on the flattest days as the swell is normaly big here and you can get pounded by the waves and the currents are very strong. Bull dog rock is also very good for cracker but you need a boat to get out there.

Its very hard to shoot fish in arniston when the water is dirty as the fish become very spooked. Its a goos sign that you saw a lot of small fish as this could mean that the summer season is starting and the fish are moving down the coast. Its a great place to dive and it will get better towards summer especially around jan/feb.

Got this Bankie at Arniston on Sunday. We had around 8m vis in the morning which dropped to about 4m later in the day.Dropped a big tail shot on the bottom in deep water which reefed up that I wasn't too pleased about.Great day at sea with not a breath of wind.

Hi Whitepointer

You can dive almost anywhere along melkbos for fish, they normally stay in the kelp  so that the best area. but the water is 90% dirty most of the time so you have to wait for the right conditions for a dive which can take months but it is woth it when the fish are around. we normally dive crayfish on the wc and shoot hotties at smallbay, big bay, whale rock, dassen island etc.
