Are Mielies still popular?

Hi

Back in the day we used to buy a tin of sweetcorn and off we went fishing. Later we started to get flavored mielies and this was the in thing. Now there are boilies, gummies, floaties, tigernuts and the list goes on. I have noticed with my own fishing that I get better results with floaties and mallows than mielies. When I speak to other anglers they seldom mention the old faithful mielie. Am I wrong or is the mielie dying a slow but steady death?

Regards
Steve

Mielies work on 'hard bottom dams', with fine stones.
But the moment there is silt or weed, the mielie is easily concealed as it settles down and less easily picked up.

The trusty old Mielie will ALLWAYS have a place in freshwater angling! Out of my experience it usually produces bigger fish than other conventional baits like dough and floaties.

a little while back we were at college farm,i must add i had become skeptical about mielies aswell being the only thing we ever used back in the day.

we were catching the usual 500g/2 kilo fish and my friend caught a few in the 4/6 kilo range all on mielies.
since then they have found there way back into my bait box

Miellies will always produce. Caught this one yesterday within 30 min in lots of watergrass using 3 maze pips. Ground feed always consist of lots of maze and fishing over this bed with maze, you can't go wrong.

Mielies are always part my arsenal. I agree, they often deliver the bigger fish, especially in rivers & where fishing is a little bit more challenging.

Results from Amatola Carp Classic last weekend....
Heaviest bag 143.26 kg's all caught on plain mielie over clean gravel bottom. Must agree though, depends on conditions and dam. Muddy bottom = floatie on shank/knot and pip on hook. Old school dams can be a pleasure to fish sometimes.
