hey guys, I am new to freshwater bait angling and am going to have a day during the week this week while I still can.

anyone want to come along and show me the ropes? failing that any advise on good safe venues near the east rand or even the vaal is not to far?

will a standard rietvlei trace be a good starting point? and what baits do you suggest?

Hi Greg

I no expert at papgooi but I have been around the block a few times.

Rietvlei should be good.

Buy some mielie bom, mix some with a little water in a backet - not too much water.  You will feel that it makes a nice sticky ball.

Get some flavored mielies and some floaties and degies.  Get a few dips to dip the floaties in - perdeby, FX, Vaaldam, pink sweets - don't buy too many, 4 or 5 should be enough.

Make the ball of mielie bom on the spring and use 2 different baits on the hooks.  Drip some dip on the bom as well.  Dip the floatie after putting it on the hook.

Cast and wait.  Try some different combo's until you find what works.

I won't be able to join you,but some safe dams around the eastrand are homestead and blaauwpan.A sliding rietvlei will be fine.I always used a large floatie and swd dipped in methylated spirits on the top hook and swd(sweet white dough) on the bottom hook with some fx on the mieliebomb at homestead and caught quite a few fish with this.Sit in the left corner of the dam next to the reeds,cast about 50-80m.There's quite a few tips on blaauwpan dam on sealine,just do a search and im sure you'll come right.

Thanks woerman and sharky, and whats the closest venue on the vaal river or dam from here? I know the area below the barrage quite well, any particular venue you would recommend?

Any of the venues below the barrage will be a good bet,but I think you'll have more luck in the dam itself.

Good venues for good fishing would be Boschkop, Ardenza, Rus 'n Bietjie (Craig54 told me he got some nice fish there).
