I'm going to Jozini 27 April for a week. Staying at Nkonkoni. I don't have a boat. Got a price of R2700 for a charter boat for day (includes tackle, bait etc) - it's a bit hectic as I'll have no one to split the charge with.
Does anyone know any cheaper boat options?
Also, besides the campsite where else can I fish from the side?

Hi guys

Waterdog lucky i am not all that mal ha ha ha Was just wondering how the posh lodges do it.

Stock, Read this report and decide having a boat is a big big advantage but dont despair as great fish can be taken from the shore as well.

So packed up the family Friday night. And left early Saturday morning. Easy border post and away we go.

The Ladies unfortunately had some last minute shopping to do in Swazi so we got to the spot late Saterday morning.

We put out some live kurper, filet baits and some sardine
Nothing. So what went wrong. The last time i was there it was difficult to keep 2 rods in the water. Ok we were late granted. so went back to camp had some lunch and got back to our spot. put out the baits and soon Run Missed. again missed. and nothing. Reeling in a fillet bait bang hit. Lost cast reel a couple of times getting hits and at last hooking a small one. Stationary baits nothing. Live bait nothing. The old man also spinning a fillet bait another small one. But a very poor day indeed. Sunday morning get there at daybreak put out baits nothing It is very cold. at about 8 all hell breaks loose Run on fillet bait run on sardine Nothing on live bait.
Started spinning again with fillets and whole kurper hooked through the lips. hit miss, hit miss. then the old man went on with a nice one. and landed a nice tiger not big but healthy and good looking. So doing some CPR on it. (Catch, photo, release) it went back to fight another day. So our short weekend came to a end. I will be back better prepared .

@ Stock try different methods and you should get some fish. even from the shore.

Cheers
Malboer

Feedback - arrived last wednesday to a cold front dam looked good and the red breasted kurper where going nuts. I cant say the same for the tigers we only got 6 rats in the four days and plenty of "bites" where the. Fish would half heartedly go for ur bait in fact two tigers were fowl hooked. It was very frustrating. Place is still awesome though good wildlife. Water was warm and clean and the beer was cold..

Can someone tell me where on the shore to fish ?
Malboer - where did you go?
One of the lodges told me that theres no where to fish from thge shore unless you're staying at a lodge and then you can fish at the lodge.

Gone fishing... we resorted. to catching barbel in the evenings biggest was 6.5 well that's were my scale maxed out. All on dead bream. Any bait works for them including sards but always have a steel trace on just in case.

Shock u can fish at the pongola nature reserve there is a large area u can fish weeds might be an issue but find a gap and fish. Also fish the honarary officers camp site it's great and have caught all my biggest tigers just south of it and u can walk there.

some years back we used to fish with the late Tony Talbot of tigerfishing safaris who operated out of the KZN camp site at Golela.

One of his skippers when asked said the best fishing spot was off the back of the boat when it was on the bank at the camp site, which sounded strange.

After chasing tiggers for many a year it's not that difficult to analyse really.

I've caught big tiggers where there have been hippo or elephant creating a lot of noise and stirring up the water, so the theory is these animals stir up the mud to release bugs and things; in come the smaller fish followed by the tiggers.

The launch site at Golela has a lot of noise in the water and I guess the tiggers come to investigate, my 2c

Well Dodger this theory of yours sound like is more than 2c worth and sound good it like natural food coming out and that’s what you need.

When I am down there I will keep an eye out for this as well, and will be in-contact with Tiger Hunter for more inside info and on the water experience.::tight:

With strike on I have decided it's to do some fishing instead so I'm off to Josini tomorrow to catch some tigers. Anyone heard of any reports coming from Josini. I now its still too early but a bad fishing day still beats a day at work.
Will send report when I get back.

good luck; the tiggers are shoal fish and generally on the move all the time, so even in winter; they have to eat; so they will be I guess around the weed beds looking for kurper to chomp.
Plastics thrown onto the weed beds and retrieved slowly might work. I would work the edges of the dam.
A good chumming of a spot might bring them in, so if you anchor throw a couple of sardine baits out.Probably best if you anchor to stick the spot for a while and maybe come back the next day, Pavlov's theory might work with tiggers Starting a motor for a couple of minutes every so generally calls the tiggers; good luck again
