any alternatives to Humminbird 1198 side imaging ?

I am looking at different finder options for my new boat .
I was keen and actually booked to take the new humminbird 1198 with side imaging . I have however now reconsidered after the sales agent couldnt supply my order due to a lack of stock (for the second time). What happens when I need spares or a new transducer ?

I know Lowrance has a similar setup but is it comparable to the 1198 humingbird in :
1. Screen size ?
2. side imaging performance in water up to 40 odd meters deep ? My understanding is that side imaging doesnt work past that and it is suggested that you swop to a secondary transducer to get maximum efficiency of down imaging only in water deeper that 40 odd meters ?
3. price ?

Does anyone have other suggestions ? I am not necessarily looking for a combo unit and would prefer to have two stand alone units . One being a finder and the other gps .

Summary:
Side scan sonar is severely affected by the roll of the boat in swell, and ultimately renders it useless if it gets too rough.  So unless your intention is to use it for targeting bait, or fishing the flats in Mozambique in less than 10ft of water for milk fish – I suggest looking at some other features that certainly will make a much bigger difference to your fishing than side scan sonar.
 
True down scan sonar to me is the single most exciting invention that has revolutionised how we read / interpret down looking sonar up to 80m at 455kHz and 50m at 800kHz.  ‘DownImaging’ from SideImaging, as found on the 797cxSI, 798 cxSI, 898 cxSI, 997 cxSI, 998 cxSI, 1197 cxSI and 1198 cxSI models, is however a hoax in my opinion.  So either go for the true DI range in Humminbird or the Lowrance StructureScan (LSS-1) than has 3 separate crystals (Left, Down, Right)
 
Lowrance’s Broadband (frequency modulation) technology coupled with the ability to choose from a range of Airmar Technology transducers makes their sonar just phenomenal.
 
Features like SonarMax Plus super bright displays (1650nits) and TrackBack are features offered by Lowrance that no angler should be without.

I own and sell both Lowrance and Humminbird - I just think for your application the Lowrance might be the better option.

If you need a 1198 i have one in stock at the moment. As for spares all our units hold a local warranty. Even if the unit is out of warranty i will gladly assist you. I would also assist with setting up the unit as well as telephonic help.

Well a huge thanks to Fishton !

He listened and understood my needs perfectly .

I have settled on a Furuno FCV 585 with Airmar 1kw through hull 50/200 khz transducer for the finder for deep water sounding .
Then a Lowrance HDS8m for chart plotting with lss1 side/downscanning transducer which operates on a different frequency to the Furuno .
All networked to work together .

Cant wait for the boat to be finished to try this combination . I am sure it will do the job well .
