Tournament: 24 hrs de Pesca de Luanda
Brief update on the upcoming event this weekend:
January 22nd - skippers meeting in NAVAL Club Luanda
January 24th & 25 - 12hrs fishing x 2 days = 24hrs
... and new joints and ligaments plus a day off to recover from exhaustive marlin/sail hunting. Leaving port at 06h00 and returning at sunset 18h00 will take it's toll on many teams. Promising grounds lie at the edge of the continental shelf, make that 30 to 50 nm offshore from Luanda port.
My team "Malta da Kianda" will be fishing the "Ska Rumba IV",
an RSA built Cobra Cat 585, a 19 foot open o/b ski boat / fishing cat, no chair (...yet).
The jury sanctions T&R. Any Blue Marlin count 1,000 pts, any sail 450.
By-catch cannot really put you up there where the marlin hunters score, so we want to try hard with our 80 lbs stand-up equipment.
Scores billfish:
- Blue Marlin/White/Spearfish etc all count 1,000 per fish,
subject to video footage (t&r in fair condition);
- just leadering & breaking the leader scores 900 pts / fish
- Sailfish of any size t&r 450pts/fish; leadering 400
Scores non-billfish:
- subject to a strict 3-per-species rule
- minimum weight regulation; fish to be presented at "gallows"
- wahoo excl from minimum regulation 5pts/kg
- yellow fin tuna mm 10 kgs and 4pts/kg
- dorado 8kgs mm and 3pts/kg
- any other eg Mako Shark 10kgs mm and 1pt/kg
Only method permitted is trolling lures and/or naturals; no drifting, chumming, jigging, bottom fishing allowed.
My estimates:
The skippers' meeting will "lure in" 25 to 30 Teams. Of these, two thirds will find fish, only half billfish. Less than one third will bring video footage to the public viewing at the NAVAL Club, half of it being Sailfish. Means after 24 hrs we will throughout the fleet have t&r around 5 to 6 Blues.
I only write this to illustrate that we don't compete with the populations of billfish around Sao Tome (BomBom), Ascension, CaboVerde or Madeira. Typical Angolan fishing for Marlin is: covering loads of miles, no score guarantee, hot n humid climate, boats in basic conditions, land infrastructures iffy...
... but undisputedly the best comeradery on the planet!!!

Billfish dont come easy. Five Marlin so far and our Sail. Two Marlin needed to be disqualified as their state of health was not well documented by the compulsory video footage and another one only came in dead after prolonged fight.

browsing over the sea temps charts, the picture becomes bleak for our fisheries and tournament plans the next 6 weeks. 30°C surface means algae will take over the coastal 50 miles and drive bait n billfish beyond our operational range.
Facts:
The tide develops when warm saltwater and nutrions rich river water of the mighty Kongo River collide. The Bay-of-Guinea-Current setting strongly due South down the coast washes this algea explosion down our coast into the Luanda-Kwanza-Sumbe range, before it disperses.
Speculation:
As I see it, the red tide already has driven billfish into our latitudes from the North, but will press on South over the next two to three weeks. The tournament fishing January 24th/25th produced unseasonal quality and quantity of billfish. A mere 15 teams managed to t&r 10 Marlin, one Marlin boarded, and two Sailfish, which we consider by all means top fishing.
When my team "Malta da Kianda" came back from our regular grounds 25 miles off Luanda, it was in only 12 miles that we found a distinct break in colour and temps... where apparently the smarter rest of the tournament fleet had been Marlin fishing all day. The current was setting strongly SW at 2.5kn...
My question:
Could the fellow anglers on the Cabinda riggs / Soyo range riggs confirm the colour and transparency of their grounds?

Report after first of three competition days
"Ska Rumba IV" dunnit again: Fish Factory. Three Marlin bite, one t&r, one hook shaker, one line broken. Currently sixths, with two more days of competition left. Yachtsmen tremble in sheer terror, when it comes to our little 585 CobraCat..:spite:spite:spite
Fleet of 22 boats went out on the lousiest weather ever, rain and windy till mid day. Still, Marlin came up hungry. 12 animals were caught, 2 taken after prolonged fights, 185kgs and 221,5kgs under the gallows. Angola/French Team "Girasol", one of the TOTAL boatclub teams, leads the pack with three Marlin T&R, followed by Team "Fountain" on two Marlin, but one taken at 185kgs. Had we not broken the line of our second fish, a hefty 400 lbs plus, we would be well in second... but, we are happy with sixths position as is.
Ballyhoo was unbeatable yesterday. My Cdre Xico stood his Marlin in 25 minuted by the boat. Excellent teamwork.

rty::Ahoi deck slave! Pls have your "motorista" drop you off at the NAUTICO no later than 07h00 on Saturday morning. Come to the short pier where you'll see "Ska Rumba IV" immediatly. We'll try to be out of port 07h15ish... ETA NAUTICO 16h15. Public viewing of the t&r footage runs til 20h00. Pls have your company driver at the NAUTICO around 19h30ish. 2nd t-shirt n a bathing shorts come handy. Pls bring your lunch pack n drink. Sunblocker n extra 1,5ltrs water advisable.

Ahoi Gerhard, yeah, rare the billfish stayed... the water appears just too warm. Statistics of the fleet speak a clear language: 22 boats this weekend, but only two Marlin and two sails t&red... Our ballyhoo found its target though, Dorado create one good overflow in my fridge, thanks to your slaving...:sec
We finish this tournament in respectable 8th. Someone with a 22kgs Dorado fished past us on the last leg... nevermind.
We'll be out again in two weeks time to test "Djamila2"s engine, then it's off to epic Lobito for one week 22-28th of March. 60plus teams (2RSA, 3Namibia) have signed up.
