Anchor Rope

Hi Guys,

Correct me if im wrong but a 100m anchor rope is required for offshore fishing?

where do you pick one of these up at a decent price as i have tried all hardware stores and have come up short.

What do you consider 'offshore' ?

An anchor requires a certain minimum angle to the horizon to work, so if the water is too deep, even if you can touch bottom you are still not 'anchored'.

IF you do get anchored, keep in mind that the anchor rope if too vertical is going to pull the vessel through the swell.

A drogue or sea anchor sometimes work better 'offshore', but keep in mind it is only suitable to limit wind drift, you still go with the current.

fanie to pass seaworthy you have to have a anchor on your boat 1 kg per meter of boat, with the correct lenght of chain and 100m rope plus on a ski boat you need a drogue anchor as well.

Hello Rory,

That is all fine and well that you comply legally, but many okes are not aware of the practical implications.

My one friend had to have a bailing bucket on his jet ski, required by law. He keeps one of these miniature ornamental milk buckets in the jet for inspections. There is no bucket size required so it passes. Kinda ridiculous.

Most okes have a minimum anchor and a thin rope, because it takes the least space and weight, not aware that the rope will cut your hands if you have to use the anchor the one time you're in trouble.

I always say, first get what actually works for you and your rig, then worry about the legal requirements. The 'law' does not think and it will not help you if you are in the thick of it.
