An earlier discussion, has lead me to ask ,whats the biggest lure that someone has actually caught a barbel on?? .If the old adage of spin/fly/lure angling holds true,i.e "match the hatch"and guys are actually catching their cousins overseas on up to 2 kg live-baits,shouldn't we be throwing bigger lures at them, and maybe catch less, but catch bigger.

Your views gentleman, and don't be shy this is free for all ,because I think its a "barren" area .

I used small barbel (300mm) as bait on the Vaal at Parys and got smashed up every time, I've allways fancied trying again but with more than 4,5kg line which is what a fish with normally:fishn

OK,here goes.(1) The smaller lure has caught hundreds of barbel(hows that for bragging)

(2) Medium-sized 10 cm ,maybe 10-12 .

(3) The 12 cm big-bodied one has caught ,habba,zilch,nada,nil.

Now the catch-rate is probably proportianate to amount of fish-time,except for the bigger one ,which I 've tried in different conditions ,and different colours, not even a bump,in fact I got the impression,it made the cats dash for cover, fleeing instead of fighting .

Questionmark yet again,if I perservered with the big mama, would I ,over time ,catch less barbel ,yet bigger barbel,or would it be a waste of summer.??

Is it not cruel how especially when throwing small lures at the coast, you hook into something that far exceeds the capacity of your tackle.I think the same goes for your freshwater live baiting, light rig light line, keeps the bait frisky ,gets the pick-up.
9 times out of 10 when your'e perfectly "dressed for the occassion" you or rather I,dont get the pick-up.

i think another technique for the bigger baits should be thought of.... if u throw that big lure, u have to cast it waaaaay past the fish and drag it back... also like with bass fishing, if the lure falls wrong and makes a big splash, fish is gone.... on my next trip inland i'm taking some of the big storm "shad" soft plastics with. they are about 20cm long and weighted.

I caught a Monsta bass one morning by actually casting my lure onto an island and then "plopping" it off the island into the water like a frog would jump in. I want to try the same with the islands in the vaal, u just have to find a nice spot where ur bait wont get stuck, so u can get the big lure into the water without it making a big noise.

I fished as you described like this on Saturday - barbel were very scared of landing lures - long casts were made over them and lures retrieved through the strike zone.

It works but yes it is something that needs to be taken into consideration when fishing for big cats with big lures

I agree that one will have to change tactics i.e casting way over barbel and then retrieving,I also think we should get some input from the bass-blokes,as i've heard that some of them specialise in using bigger lures to catch monsters.

From what i've read ,they do then catch less, yet they catch the lunkers.Marthin if I may make a suggestion,it would be to cast with a serious braid onto the islands,so that if you do get stuck, you can use a bit of force to become unstuck. As far as I recall those huge "Storm" lures have a single in the back, but I would recommend changing to singles on the other types when doing "Island-hopping",it should get stuck a little less than trebles.

Cheers

Took my nephew out on the barbel hunter this morning,he was nailing them big-time on chicken-livers and platties ,I stuck to my guns and kept tossing "bigger" artlure at them and guess what ? I didnt even get an investigative knock !We eventually tallied 11 cats between 4 and 8 kilo's ,none on my lure, makes me think that their size/lack of, played a role in them not taking the bigger lures, but summer is really not here yet, and only time will tell if one will catch more lunkers on bigger artlures, than smaller types.
When you've casted till your arms need a break, all sorts of ideas come into your head, like, you can catch a big barbel on a small lure but you cant catch a small/medium barbel on a huge lure, but hey, that wasnt the idea of the experiment in the first place now ,was it ? Time will tell

Hiya Kitefisher, It was worth the effort! I recon you should give it another go when Summer is in full swing.

Talking of Summer, when the hell is it gonna be here!! I don't think I have ever waited this long!

I think the fish of this country is facing a massive onslaught when summer finally arrives,I can sense everybody getting geared up for a huge battle of tactics and techniques.Maybe its a good thing ,these last couple of cold fronts,it keeps the passion burning and what better thing to keep an angler motivated, than the thoughts of what may come lurking in your piece of the pond.
