Amazing experience - GT's at Sheffield Beach KZN

Hi all, new to the forum (ish) but been lurking for a while.
just wanted to share a amazing expereince that I had on the Easter Saturday.

I live in JNB, and went home to Sheffield Beach on the KZN North Coast. I have grown up there. Our family has had a cottage there since 1923, I have grown up there,  and in 30 years have never seen this before.  I am also fairly new to fishing, and have a 7' Megaforce rod with a Daiwa 2500.  I fish with 5.5 kg Mono, small jig heads, and am perfectly happy to stroll the beach for hours, just casting, even if nothing bites. My best catch so far, is a Shad!!!.
Anyway, as I was wading to the outer rocks, I noticed thousands of Karanteen in the water, seperating a path for me as I waded through the knee deep water.  Strange, I thought. Suddenly, the fish started moving, the water sarted boiling, and I caught a glimpse of 5 or 6 big fish entering the shallow rock pools, obviously hunting the karanteen.  I immidiately put my lure about 5 metres in front of me, and what-do-you-know, the "big fish" took the lure. I set the hook, and he snapped me off like a gun-shot. 5.5 kg mono, what was I thinking.
This continued for the entire afternoon, and at low tide, I was picking up karanteen off the rocks, and throwing them back in. I did get a good look at the "big fish" later that afternoon when they were in the extreme shallows, and I am 99% sure they were GT's.
I have since upgraded to braid, and am waiting for this to happen again, when I am back home.

Has anyone else seen this before, is it normal, were the GT's starving, what causes them to do this, or is it normal???

Tight lines,

wow what an experience! they could also have been greenspot kingies, they are also known to hunt very shallow water

lol no the kingies weren't starving! haha there was an abundance of food so they went ahead and ate some :p

When GT's or any Kingies get fish herded like that they'll always attack and are absolutely ruthless

The Blacktip or Yellowtail kingfish hunt in this manner.

I have seen them chase karanteen onto the shore on a few occasions.

Not even in knee deep water. They wait for a wave then ATTACK!!!!

It's a lovely site to see.

i know what you mean its an amazing experience! they actually leave the baitfish stranded on the rocks and sand!
