When I see Arum Lillies bloom in the field so too, my ambitions bloom, with the prospect of a changing season!

Despite the cold weather, the Winter Solstice has passed almost 30 days ago and the Earth is slowly receiving 2 minutes extra daylight per day in the Southern Hemisphere.

This results in a sudden bloom of plankton which kicks off a whole chain reaction up the food chain! With a few days of sunlight and ideal swell, there should be some fish in the water.

Sunrise: 7h48 Sunset:17h56 High Tide : 15h08 Low Tide: 08h54 and 21h13 Moonrise: 06h57 Moonset: 17h31

We decide to target Cob with the pushing tide as it’s one day before New Moon and pushing tide is always a good time to fish! We target deepwater areas which has the potential of BIG COB!
We get to the scene at 13h00 and my friend Mark tells me that he had a smash on his first cast!! The “locals” landed a White Steenbras, Cob and some other bank fish! Things are looking promising! The White Steenbras’s affinity for Moonshine Worm was its downfall! Phillip and Furl have that one figured out!! J :wfish

Haroun’s first cast sees his bait smashed and the fish is off L ! Now we know that we’re in the right area and the fish are in feeding mode! Wasn’t long when Mark went down with a descent Stump of 32cm

Then it was my turn! Rigged a whole, skinned mullet, which seemed irresistible to this 60cm Cobbie J ! The fish are fighting hard and strong because of the colder, nutrient rich, oxygenated water.

Fever hitting the ceiling, I re-rig and try and cast as hard and as deep as possible as I can, I barely wait a minute when I feel a huge swipe! I decide to straight stick the fish as there’s a nasty reef which the like diving behind which make landing impossible. I can feel this is a bit bigger than the previous one and I “bully” the fish out!

Hooks bedded deep in the gut, I land a beautiful 84cm specimen! ::S

Now things are really going hectic and we’re only into the first hour of fishing and it’s still 2½ hours before high tide! I get to land a small stump of 34cm and it looks like the smaller fish are back, all the while Haroun’s getting smacked left, right and centre but not landing the fish! He had one huge run which almost saw his rod hit the floor, two headshakes and the line was bitten right through!!

Things quickly go quiet on high tide, as if the fish went on a tea break :swear! Soon after high tide the enquiries start coming in but not as solid as with the rising tide...

I land a size cob after high tide and things are now totally dead, the run ended just as quickly as it started L !

Lesson : When the fish are on the bite, ignore everything else and make use of that window period !

Total bag for the evening between Haroun, Mark and I.

WAHAHAHAHA!! I have a valid reason for that .... you see the areas I fish , you need a quick get away or camouflage, usually I hide behind my rod ! ::S
