Good day,

I've been offered  a combo unit - Garmin 420S for R6k, less than a year old with all the accessories. Is it a good buy? I tried looking for a new 1 on the net & can't seem to find any.

Shot,

Bruce

Bruce, I have a 420S and it works well.  If the unit is complete with transducer and 2G map it is a good buy. I paid R9,500 last year for mine, but keep in mind that the 2G map alone cost R2,500 and if that is not included then the price is probably to steep by R1,000.

Without the map the R6,000 is to close to the price of a new one, then rather buy new.

No, the 2G map is not the software. Check on the internet for the advantages of having a 2G map compared to the normal map. Also the 420S manual gives a detailed description of the advantages of installing a 2G map. For instance, as well as many other useful features, a 2G map changes your sonar to 3D. All of which I find unnecessary and seldom use, but the point being that if the 2G map is not included then the asking price is to expensive as you could get a brand new model for R1,000 more.

My map is Namibia to Knysna and for your area it would probably be Knysna to Mozambique.
