Good call Rory, we sometimes overlook the obvious!
I have had this with an old 70 Evenrude, when the coils got hot the wire apparently expanded and opened up a fault..?? Once cooled down it would fire up again... Had it rewired and all sorted....
NB! When cold all the resistance and continuity was exactly the same as the other motor...
The rewinders have an oven they put the coils in to test under load and heat, this is how they picked up the problem on mine.
