Advertising of Rods these days.......

Hi All,

How come rods are no longer advertised clearly as graphite or conventional any more, or is that just not an issue these days?

I have been seriously looking for a decent set of 12" bank angling rods recently but not even the professional online dealers advertise whether rods are graphite or whatever! even the classifieds here do not include this information. Is there something I have missed?? does it even matter?

I was always of the opinion that graphite rods were far superior to anything else out there yet you can never tell what you're about to buy because its not clearly defined or they use all these fancy scientific words to tell you a whole lot of nothing.

Please let me know your opinions on this guys and girls....

I'm almost certain 99% of rods these days are made from graphite, every facet of angling has moved over to graphite.

Thanks for the feedback Hennie.

That would certainly explain alot. I am really keen on Shimano Beastmasters for instance and they advertise it as being biofibre and I am thinking, WTF?

Anyway I guess that where technology gets us, big words and big prices.

most rods that are manufactured currently are carbon fiber or graphite
though your entry level rods are of a fiber glass or composite graphite
but those you'll easily be able to tell as they are your more entry level
rods thats come in at an affordable price point and are often the ones that are sold as combos.

rods - they tend to have very little information printed on the rods directly
most info that you might get it the length and the line class or test curve

maybe to help you differentiate better on your carbon or graphites -
you will notice a little sticker with a warning for electricity usually with a little man, over head power lines / clouds and a lightning bold warning that the rods conduct electricity.

but on the printed rod tag you should be able to extract a bit more information about the specs opposed to the rod its self.

also there are a bit of resources available online where manufactures some times give a bit more information on the rods (but not always)
and there are helpful members that are on the forum who would also be able to help you out.

I sort of made the connection too by using the price tag as an indicator of quality, so big price equals quality rods! (obviously)

Looks like I am going to go for the new Oval DC's, hella pricey but I wont need to replace them for years to come.

the beast masters are great rods - i have 8 of them
and i love them but thats me

and allot of people would say that you can get better rods out there which i don't doubt, within in that price range and that the shimano technonogy is old. compared to the new technology that current rods are being manufactured with.

i picked up this info on biofiber

BIOFIBRE
Biofibre is ‘state of the art’ in terms of rod construction and is 4 times stronger than any other carbon material. It involves the random distribution of ‘non woven’ biofibres and mid-short fibres that don’t cross each other, but ‘float’ in an elastomeric (synthetic rubber) resin to reinforce the carbon fibres in all directions. This process produces amazing strength ensuring rods constructed using the Biofibre process are incredibly strong and durable. Because of the significant increase in strength, you would naturally assume that weight has been sacrificed to achieve this remarkable level of durability. You’ll therefore be even more surprised to learn that Biofibre is 2.4 times lighter than the lightest carbon fibre.

if you pick up a beast master you"ll see that the make up of the rod has a much more wavy look.

Perhaps I will look a little more into this as I love the Shimano rods, and as I have baitrunners I think its the best match naturally.

clinte i could generally agree with price = good
but thats not always the case hey,

aslo before just going out and purchasing the most expensive rods
make sure that they are suited for you and your fishing style.

ive had some one i know go out and purchase flagship rods from the range of rods that the company manufactures. thinking that the price he was paying was gonna give him the advantage by having the best rods.

i can still out cast him on my normal rods that are cheaper than his
but now he cannot fish those rods effectively - cause it doesn't suit his style.

man where about are u based? cause if you go the the bigger shops there us usually a large selection of rods, and from there u can feel them in your hands and then feel if u like them or not?

the sensation dc feel some what stiff compared to a beast master imo


westerns some times might let u take out a rod for a demo if u ask
or they used to have a casting session at homestead dam on a sunday where they bring their rods for you to test out, all u do is bring ur reels and weights.

maybe speak to some of the guys on the forum to have a test etc and go through some older posts on rods as its a topic that comes up quite often.

then take it from there

what shimano gear are u refering to rods and reels?

western accesories are in boksburg in north rand road

and gani's are in witbank (well worth the drive if your wanting to buy equipment)

there is mias also in benoni and wood mead.

Yeah rods and reels.

Mias I find to be too pricey, I went to the one in fourways because its around the corner from my office and I nearly fell on my ass at the prices there....

i usually check out the stuff out at those places
then start shopping around for the best price.
i often piss off the shop owners telling them that i can get stuff cheaper
and they are nuts with their prices

but usually from there i save up and take a drive to ganis in witbank and buy my big tackle items in one go. which is often a big saving.

u can also call them and purchase and they deliver .
