Abramsrust Vaal River Advise

Haven't been there in a while but usually plenty of boats in that area, nice grassy venue with lot of shade. The usual stuff works there - whole dead bird/mouse/day old chick/chicken livers and obviously a platanna. Take your bass rod along as well - hear they are on the bite. Please let us know if anything comes out.

Morning guys
Abramsrust is a great venue with plenty shade, green grass at the water’s edge with braai facility’s and ablutions.
Only down side is the boats and jet skis that cruise up and down all day on the river some of them coming so close to the edge you think your line is going to get caught in there props and you going to lose all your rods.
But there is an upside to this I found this weekend just about every time a boat or jet ski went past minutes later we would start getting bites and started pulling fish, its almost like the fish went to sleep and are woken every time by the boats going past, strange I know!!
We caught 16 fish for the day and lost about 3, I managed to land a nice Cat 6.5 kg on a carp head, the bait lay for about 3 hrs before it was picked up. The other 15 fish where all small carp nothing over 1kg.
The carp where mostly caught on a sweet dough and plain/honey floaties with a bomb.
Never the less a great days fishing yesterday ill surely go back there again.

Well done dave. Great to get some fish under the belt. Dont get to frustrated when you blank, i look at it as an oppertunity to understand more about what im doing. If you blank there is a reason as why. Fihure out that reason and slowly but surely you blank less and less.
How far out where your baits, and at what depth? It could be that when the boats cam past they disturebed the silt at the bottom. This may have made your bait visble and easier for the fish to pick up. So if you where in shallowish water the fish may have been on your bait the whole day, but only had access to it when the baots kicked up the silt. I may be wrong but is interesting to try figure out why those fish bit after the boat came pst.

We did not camp there, we were just day visitors which costs R50 pp and R60 a car to get in.
The toilets are not the best I must say, i found it rather clean on the grounds itself here and there I found things lying around on the grass I think they could use better management.
There chalets do look a little grotty and are far from the water’s edge.
And from a safety point yes I thinks it safe there, the security walks around there all the time, when we there on Sunday there was no one else there but us until about 11h00 then two other cars pitched up but I suppose that was because the weather was to k@k yesterday.

Thanks man, Our baits where not more than 40 m in front of us and I think the river in that part is quit deep as it took a bit of time to get the line ready for a policeman as we had to get rid of the slack first, I don’t think the boats would have turned up the silt in this case.

Thanx for the feedback. Once I went to Abramsrust & the only thing working that day was brown bread, with a touch of beer; Im guessing it wouldve worked even better had I known about the curry brown-bread recipe that time. Im glad the river in that neck of the woods is producing some results again, I've had a bit of bad luck there & further down for a while; & that considering the weather was fluctuating throughout the day yesterday. Good on you with all the catches. Did you try earthworms or stronger flavours besides sweet?

We went to the caravan park here and just got caught in the rain - couple of very small carp came out - very very quiet.

No, it's the old caravan park next to the casino on the transvaal side. R22 entrance - limited spots available and the boats have got right of way - so if they want to park you have to move.
