Government is set to lift the ban on abalone fishing.

 

It was announced on Sunday that the restriction on perlemoen fishing will be lifted, but the exact terms will only be determined next year.

President Jacob Zuma as well as Fisheries and Forestry Minister Tina Joemart-Petterson addressed members of the Overberg fishing community in Hermanus on Sunday.

 

Zuma met the community two months ago and promised to report back to them on concerns over fishing rights.

The community says it is struggling to survive.

Zuma was greeted with song and dance when he arrived in a military chopper in Hermanus.

There were pictures of a new force of ex APLA and Umkhonto Veterans to police the abalone poaching!

But my gut feel is that nothing will stop the poaching.

From what I understand, poaching increased after the suspension of the fishery.

The fishery always existed it was just "suspended" for a while.

I don't know enough about it but keep in mind that perlemoen rights were allowed for very specific areas. This means that it would have been unwise to go and fish in another persons area.

Its all a political scam! Zuma wants their votes,bottom line. Get these people training and education so they are able to work in other fields. The perlemoen hasnt just magicaly re-appeared overnite! Wel be adding it to the extinction list very soon!

Poaching will stop all right........ the day when the last abalone have been taken from our ocean, which is not to far of anyway!

SA... if you can't manage to control crime, legalize it... problem solved!

His "anouncement" that it now resorts under "Economics" is just a smoke screen to cover his/their backsides  for when the tropical fruit hits the rotating blades, the buck can be passed onto another hapless soul in the "Perlegate"

 

The images of the so called "Enforcers" , ALL ex FAPLA and MK (*)"soldiers" makes one think about the title bestowed upon them   "Men in Black"   How partial are they going to be??

 

 

(*) "soldiers" = terrorists.
