A few Recent Catches

The fishing around East London has turned a little tough in the last 2 months. There was a Raggie smash after some rain and flooding a while back and then they just seem to have all but dissapeared. There have been a few decent lonely Raggies caught but even Fish Point is slow at the moment.

I have been putting in some hours and it's been hard work for very little reward but here are a few sharks I've managed.

Back in October I managed this little Raggie of 107cm (about 20kg) at Gonubie Point. It was small but I landed it on a 9' Berkley Air and 10lb Fireline which at least gave it a sporting chance.

While fishing for Kob at Cefane in November I put out a sharks bait as the water was quite cold and it produced a  of Spotted Gulley Sharks of 153cm.

A trip to Leonards for the evening when Boepens and his gang were doing an all nighter produced a decent Spotted Gulley of 161cm

It was then time to chase after the Saltiga lever drag on offer for the heaviest non ed at the annual FishingEC comp at Haga Haga. The small grey were wild and in the end I only managed a 79cm & 85cm. This however was a lot closer to the prizes than I would have imagined. The 85cm missed the 3rd place Raggie by 200g but the 1st and 2nd prize went to Greg Kellerman with greys of 87cm & 90cm.

Here's the 85cm

I have to go all the way back to August to remember a solid stretch from a tripple digit shark so my hopes were high when I set the hooks in a Raggie at Gonubie point the past wednesday night. However in the end the feisty 172cm male raggie came up short of the magical tripple in weight but not in spirit.

Last night Wade 001 and myself did an all nighter at Leonards and we arrived to what could only be described as PERFECT sea conditions. The 1st slede produced a hook up with what felt like a 40kg Raggie but it got tangled in some line & reef and bit the leader off.

After that we battled with pick ups but the sharks were not committing. In the end the weather closed in and it got miserable and very wet!! Wade was doing his 1st overnighter and was a bit under prepared. After burn off at 11:30pm from a suspected Grey of decent size the lightning arrived as well so we called it a night.

After a very broken and uncomfortable 3 hrs sleep I was up while Wade decided to sleep in. It was not long before I had a 161cm Spotted Gulley on the line.

After a few more non commited bites that I couldn't set the hooks on I eventually set the hooks on a smallish shark that turned out to be a 141cm Raggie Female. We then fished on until 11am at which time we left without anymore bites. As we got to the car Boepens was arriving to take over from us as they are there tonight.

The secret to fishing at Palms which I have learned by watching boepens is firstly where and how far to cast depending on the tides and secondly what bait works best for different fish. But if you can cast 90m at the point on the pushing tide and at high then youre on the money,as the tide starts to drop then cast further and more right.

I had a look at the Barometer after I got that mms this morning as well as Nigels 185kg at fish point and I suspect that's what turned on the bite.
I'm on my way in an hour to Gonubie point to see if I can get stretched on the low tide.

Good luck altie.

U should know the changing of winds causes barometer movement witch in turn can cause fish to feed.

Ull learn :fbash:fbash:fbash

Nice one Burned Off, make him cry:lol:1::craz
Now where is a picture of it?

I went to Gonubie point last night and it was slow as usual but 20 minutes before low I decide to put out a couple fresh baits and push a little past the planned midnight departure.
I throw a mullet bait and then slide some grey shark fillet with some liver strapped to it.
Before long I see a bit of activity on the rod tip and I'm sure the shark fillet is getting eaten. It's not the usual kind of movement so I keep an eye on it and then a see 2 harder pulls. Now I don't need anymore convincing and I move over to my rod much to the disgust of Wade who has watched TV for our last 3 trips LOL.

I pick up the rod and get pulled flat. I set the hook and immediately I can feel it's not to big but it is in nylon. After a fair tussle I land what would be a first for me, a 134cm pcl(32kg) Cow Shark.
I was seriously happy because I've always wanted to see & catch one. I then went about untangling it from the line it was tangled in. The most difficult part was yet to come!! Trying to get a photo of a shark that can turn back, twist and turn like no shark I have ever seen.

In the end this was the best pic we managed of my 1st Cow Shark
