Do you use a boot, going past the serf seems a little dangerous what about sharks and currents?

I wear a 3mm neoprene sock, you should be able to get them from Sportsmans Warehouse for about R100.

You need to study the are you are going to dive, don't just jump in, look at the area and for the possibility of rip currents and the likes. Use them to your advantage like with drift diving.

As far as sharks go, don't act like its food and he wont eat you. Remain as calm as possible and never turn your back to them.

What are the minimal requirments of good fins

I would say a length that would allow a maximum acceleration with a minimum effort.

You also need to take your size and athletic ability into account. There is no use getting 1m long stiff blades if you don't have the strength to kick them.

As mentioned, check with Eckart if he does not have a secondhand set in your size going for a good price.

Will do! I must admit seeing the rock pool makes me can't wait to be in the deep blue ocean! Any one have any idea of some more reading I can do on the net

I learnt a lot browsing through this forum, asking questions and looking for advice (just like you are doing).

I also did a lot of other reading on world reknowned freedivers and spearfishermen alike.

People like Trevor Hutton, Chris Coates and Cameron Kirkconnell, to name but a few. Also try and get a copy of "Freedivers Manual - by Umberto Pelizzari" and I think there is a local book out too.

Then I just watched clip after clip about spearfishing on youtube :)

Regards, Shifty.
