Mostly electrical. Stators and cdi's on older mercs and mariners did give hassles. If you look under flywheel you will either have a black stator or a red one. The red one is good as is used to replace the black ones. A Stator and CDi could set u back R5k-8k per motor. If the motors have the red ones it will be a big positive factor. Rest depends on how well looked after and serviced.

agree 100%!!and remember mariner parts are expensive very expensive,and see your looking into 115hp yamahas,there is not much diffrance between them and 85-90hp yamahas just much more thirstyer rather go for the 150hp v6 2stroke,one of my comm friends had 90hps on his boat sold them to his brother in law and fitted 115hps,his fuel consumption is now a lot more with very minimal advantages,he is very pissed about his dicision,his brother inlaw is always 20min at the fish before him cause every morning he sukkels him in his mo..r to start them(sorry for my english jong)

Had an old 115 YAmmie which was very thirsty. Never really battled to start her but she did ask for a new cdi at R3.5k. Smoked like hell at idle and i wondered if maybe the 4th piston had lost its skirt as i could not get any adjustment on its carb.
