Nice catches!!! How would you rate the fishing around Auckland? Compared the further north or some.of the outlying islands. I know coromandel is epic but is Auckland overfished?

Done some egi yet?

Hi AD, thank you :)
The fishing around Auckland is great, as with most places knowing what time of year and tide etc for each spot / specie is key. I do a fair bit of fishing from the boat and shore and rarely ever come back mombakkies. There are also a good number of amazing spots within an hour from the city.
As for the egi - I've tried once and when the squid finally showed up so did these guys... needless to say it wasn't successful at all.

Thanks Fluke! A big yellowtail off the rocks would be awesome. Something like this... http://youtu.be/7Wm-BjBZOUs

Now that's what I'm talking about;) reminds me of the days I've spent at Rooikrantz @ Cape Point. Sadly my biggest there is 8kg and the biggest I've seen was 12,5kg. I heard that a 15kg was once caught there.

Will be in Hermanus this Christmas so will probably do a Cape Point trip or 2 and try get some yellowtail action:)

8kg is a great size! I've never fished Rooikrantz, but I've lost count how many times I've tried for tail off the rocks in Fish Hoek and at Simons Town. Good luck over December, I'll keep an eye out for your report. ::tight:

It was so unexpected, as I never knew they even existed. At first I thought it was a snoek attacking the 'snoek' I had hooked. You learn something new everyday :) . It was jigged out of 30m and was hooked mid level. Was an expensive day, we lost plenty of jigs to snoek and only had one yellowtail the whole day.

I've caught one gemfish off Mayor Island and lost plenty of tackle to them too. I'm going to work on the bluenose and wreckfish (Hapuka) this winter, I want them on a jig. Hopefully there be a pic up here in a couple of months.

You shouldn't have any issues catching any of the rays here, there are tons of them.
