So I went to Roodeplaat Nature Reserve for the day hoping to get at least one fish. Got there at about 7:30 and started looking for a nice spot. This was not easy as there was a lot of hyacinth floating everywhere. Apparently the cable at the NTvl grounds was lifted and all the floaters got releast into the dam. Eventually got a spot to the right (right across from the first buoy about a 100m out) in a small gully. Was still setting up when the guy next to me hooked into his first fish of about 1kg. As the morning progressed I started chatting with my neighbour. His name was Sam from Benoni. He told me about his first trip to Roodeplaat during the winter with his brother-in-law and how they didn't catch a thing. And then this Older guy came along and caught a whole bunch of nice carp using mielie-pap. So today he brought mielie-pap along and that's what he got his first fish on that morning.
Fishing was difficult as the floaters constantly blew over my lines. Eventually I put my whole stand in the water with the rod tips submerged. This helped a lot as none of the floaters hooked my lines for the rest of the day. Sam did the same thing, but because he wasn't in a little gully like I was, he had one or two floaters still giving him fake reelruns lol! So as we sat there waiting and chatting and me telling him to check out Sealine, Sam got this screaming reel-run at about 13:30. It looked like a nice fish on the line as Sam was trying to bring it closer to the bank through all the floaters. About 10m out the line got stuck on a 1m wide bunch of hyacinth. I could see the stress on Sam's as this was definitely a personal best stuck to a piece of hyacinth and some unknown guy is trying to net it. Fortunately I could get in behind the fish and with one scoop the beast was netted. I wish you could see the look on Sam's face! It was like catching your own PB. What an adventure! The fish was released immediately and it swam away strongly. None of us had a scale, so maybe some of you guys can give a guesstimation on the weight?
But I don't know why Sam hasn't joined Sealine yet. Hopefully he sees these pics!
