3 3/4 Months in Angola

thanks guys, I went there with an epic report in mind.

Fedu I really wanted to go to Rio Longa but not as my sole responsibility! There are still massive resident snapper in the mouth there, that is a truly unspoilt area.

Trophy - I fished like there was no tomorrow, fished hard and although I lost (more than I) trophy fish I did alright in the end :) Next adventure is black rays, duckbills and bronzies.. stay tuned ;)

Enigma - Was good meeting you, next time we will have time to have a proper chat! Ants has my old kayak but got an aquasprat now

MANNA !! and plenty of it AQUA.

Much appreciate your scientific view on the
versatility of species. Loads of homework.
I loved all the pictures and I know I will resort
to them when fishing the odd weird-ass. Still
cannot believe how many different species you
caught in such short time! Best image though is
your scorpion. Loved it: loaclly named "lacrau"
I think.

Pot luck on your spiderbite and the infections.
Was the first thing us parents had to fight down
when arriving here with our kids. Ever since my
son Joel (who got bitten in bed) is obsessed with
spiders! I'm glad you managed to stay away from
attracting the other buggers, malaria and such.
When going on the geology and other fieldtrips,
I'm a real sissy when it comes to protecting from
risks and avoiding the critters onshore. Had a call
from our geo specialists in the field two weeks ago
Sunday morning: "Jan, were standing in a minefield
near Sumbe. Please, bail us out!"

Angola is full of surprises and makes for higtened
awarenes and even more intensely enjoyed good
times. After 22 years in Angola I can guarantee that!
I admit, I'm getting high on those improvisos every
week in Luanda!

I believe the sardine-like species in your pics is a
West African Ilisha.
Latin: Ilisha Africana
Portuguese: Capasecca

The other smallish bass-like with yellow fins might be
a Dara, which is quit rare and has not even an Angolan
name to it.
Latin: Parakuhlia Macrophthalamus

thank you Pargo Man, I am looking into those species you mentioned.

What type of spider is in the picture you posted? I was bitten at Kwanza and at Flamingo haha they follow me everywhere. I saw a lot of jumping spiders at Kwanza, dont know if they will bite.

How do you bail someone out of a minefield, with a helicopter? haha :)

Spiderman Chris, hi again.

You're a tough cooky, to sleep with your windows open in Africa?!

I would'nt know what type of spider sits on the clay there. I'm lacking your scientist gene.

The fellow that bit by son was much more slender, less hairy but the size of the palm of my hand with legs stretched out. Joel was screeming, I woke up, no specs on, stormed into the boys room, switched on the light, the fr!cki!ng spider racing for shaddow, I sprayed the bugger till frozen... and then had to move out of my marital comfort and move in with Joel for the next 10 month, before he could sleep through again without nocturnal screem attacks...

I guess the cleaner had let daddy longlegs in. The palm tree and banana in the frontyard of our residence must be the genuine habitat of that 8leged perigrin.

Since then, we never open the windows and make sure the doors etc are all hermetically tight, then perform sector spraying and have very little problems anymore with bugs and pest in the house.

Land Mines:
Yeah, that bail out was freaky. By midday that Sunday we had a policeman, two sappers, the foreman of the FCKS cement plant construction site under the coordination of our coinvestors shoulder-2-shoulder with our geologists to walk them out of harms way. The ambiguous markers apparently were put to stake Governmental Land Reserve... phuuuuhhh... close call.

Chris, thanks once again for your scientist impulse in biology and fishing techniques and much success for your further studies.

Be safe, All.

Wow Aqua what a nice report to read on a Friday at work.

We are a couple o okes that's been talking on/off about making a trip up there. After this we will most definitely consider it.

With sadness we read that it might not last. Like all good things and exploitation hey :-(

Anyways: Still wondering: How DID you manage to get away for 3 3/4 months?

Aqua - You are one brave but lucky man to be able to resign for an opportunity like that.
Alex has been making a few of us really jealous with his stories of the various fish and beach adventures.
By the sounds of it there are a number of fly fishing opportunities there? Any ideas?

yeah there are, for example the shad are right at your feet a lot of the time. Also baby leeries are in the front gutter for lack of an estuary....
plenty baardman there too if you can find a fly they will eat, as well as billions of blacktail, some zebra and random small reds... Kob, well at Cunene yes you will slay them on anything... if you put a banana peel in the water you will catch a kob.

At Kwanza you can catch threadfin, snapper, corvina (kob), jacks and if you are fortunate a tarpon on fly.. Also the tripletail will gobble flies of you can keep them away from the pesky garfish... offshore the dorado are a joke, again I recommend a banana peel or sandwich crust immitation
