2Hp Yamaha 2b leaking cylinder head gasket

Hi, My 2hp Yamaha 2b old head gasket has been reused. It has a slight leak, you can see the water slight drip at the bottom of the head. The mechanic says it will go away after using it a few times. He says the salt will seal the leak. Is it possible? The motor runs well and stays cool, no water seem to be entering the cylinder. Should I take his word for it or replace the gasket. A new gasket cost R360.00. Does anybody out there know if there is a replacement gasket which is cheaper? Your help would be appreciated.

Rubbish. Send it back. In fact, if it's leaking, chances are water is leaking into the cyliner head. This causes many problems, worst of which is corrosion in the engine. It will damage the head and water doesn't compress so it will destroy the piston.

A leaking head gasket is a big problem.

R360 is much cheaper than rebuilding the whole engine. It's a no brainer really.

I will have to get the head gasket. I thank you for your advice. This outboard mechanic has been doing outboards for many years, I can't believe he told me to do this unless he knows something we don't know.

if you keep it the way it is you will end up spending more than just the cost of the head gasket

Aluminum has a nasty habbit of coroding, literally oxidizing a channel along the leak, what will hapen is when the gasket fails the entire surface will need to be machined and the repair cost will be sky high, most probably leading to entire rebuild of the engine

This is a nice way for your mechanic to make double or more profit on one job, and if he is actually ok with this kind of work, i recommend finding somebody else with higher standards

You dont want to blow a gasket a few km from the slip

You should tell us who the mechanic is so we can avoid the same fate.
+1

I work on aviation engines and that kind of work practice will get my license revoked, and give me, one of only 3 mechs in the country in my field and specialty losing to the other 2.

i know 2 poke boats are common, but a mech with standards that low can not gamble on your life

seeing its a 2-stroke imagine being stuck 100m from the sluice gates with a current drawing you closer......:kaykak hope you have oars

rather find a real mechanic that does thing according to ISO standards
