What an unbelievable experience ! First 2 days sitting and waiting. Then came Friday, the first fishing day. 39 Boats entered. Of we went with LiaNelle, 3 crew to the 12 Mile banks. Heard over the radio from strikes "on/off" all over the place. Then at 13h00 my Tiagra 50 starts screaming ! On the big Pulsator blue/pink luer, not very far behind the boat (15m).  VAS ! Stripped Marlin jumping out of the water ! What a sight. After 25 min the grabbed the leader, took the photo and of it went again. That happend 4 times. All this time the drag was on strike (10kg). I only loose it a little bit after the leader was grabbed. The last time the fish came up on the water, we tried to grab the bill for xtra 5 points, the hook came loose and of she went. Measured app 2.7m (that was from the point of the bill - which is not correct I know, but thats all we could measure). My first Marlin caught and released. Because we were only 3 on board, we did not managed to take nice pictures. Anyway, arrived at the clubhouse only to hear that I caught the only Marlin for the day ! How lucky can you be ?

Saturday was a beautiful day. Many boats off to the the Alfa banks. We decided to work the same area as the day before. On/off  and some fish caught and released - lots off action at the Alfa Banks ! Damm we thought, maybe whe made the wrong choice, but the fish were at the 12 Mile banks the day before, and at 14h00, everyone tired of trolling the whole day, I heard a very small strike on the SAME luer. At that stage nobody watched the spread. I jumped from my seat and saw the Marlin comming back to hit the luer again. It was Eddies turn now. On/Off. Doing 9 knots at that stage, I increased the speed to 11 knots and it came back again ! On/off. And another strike, off again ! By the time it strike the luer for the fifth time, VAS ! Eddie was on with his first Marlin. Now 4 on board, I grabbed the camera to take some nice pictures. The fish measured 2.2m (correct measurement).

In total for the comp 16 fish catched and released ( one Sailfish of app 50kg as well !!) We were very happy with our first 2 Marlin - and had an experience I will never forget.

Eddie vas !

A very happy crew !

We also went to the Alfa Banks (also a first for us) the Tuesday before the comp started, caught and released over 80 fish. 7 species ! Brought back a couple off Dorados and Ytail. Not big fish, but a also something off the "bucket list" !

Sorry - here is the happy crew ! I've decided in January to take LiaNelle to Sbaai for Feb and March, and so far that paid off ! I believe from the locals it is the best time of the year for fishing in Sbaai. Can't wait to go back.

Nice Pieter!

Sal post as ek dit kry

Thanks for the report, Peks.

You guys have been quiet during the comp, but that is understandable with the first two days not fishable.(ons was nogal nuuskurig wat daar aangaan - lyk my die laaste twee dae het jull goed behandel).

Who won the comp?

Breads - saam met wie was jy uit - die man so paar huise van jou af (Mia)?

Hallo Barte

Ons bietjie vis was so 5 myl wes van Groot Sandkoppe

Breads,

Nice fish. Well done!

One thing I noticed and read this morning on another blog...seems like the guys had a lot of on/off fish. There is rumours of one boat having 17 strikes and only one fish landed. Is this just the inexperience of the cape fishermen when it comes to billfish or maybe competition rules regarding hook settings. Anyone want to explain?

On Sunday, the day after the comp the 17 strikes and one landed did happen to one of the boats at the Alpha Banks.

I believe we were very lucky with our 2 fish, but saying that I did study the post started by HT/ Fishing Adv I think : "Billfishing and Big Game fishing : How to" - the very sharp hooks, troll speed, bigger luers closer to the boat etc etc. Just wanted to do some of the basics right, as this was our first time. I believe that improved our chances. BUT we were lucky to find/raised the fish. There was a lot of boats that are experienced billfish anglers who did not catch anything. It just was not their day. That happens all the time. Next time they will be in the top positions.

Thats absolutely awesome man ! I would love to see my Dad catch a Marlin, he taught me everything he knew about fishing, and turned me into the fishing Freak that I am, and I have been very spoilt and got to catch a few so far...........and he hasnt. I think he is still young enough so maybe this can still come true !

I fished with 2 brothers in Richards Bay who fished their whole lives together, and witnessed them both release their 1st Marlin from a Double Strike.............i had to wait till the following year.

Well done Pieter!! My lewer voel opgeswel en my bankbelaans min ha ha. Cheers
