2011 Goliath Record!!

In July 2011 Pierre Uys from South Africa hooked and landed a pig of a fish, what dreams are made of. After a long fight and  repeated attacks from other large tigers this 40kg hydrocynus goliath female was in the boat... unfortunatly she did not survive the battle...

Not sure how true this is but this is apparently the new world record, 46kg caught in the Congo River

The name "tigerfish" has occasionally been used for species of cichlid in the genus Rhamphochromis. These are large, silver-colored fishes that may have one or two black horizontal lines running the length of the body. These fish are native to Lake Malawi in Africa. They can measure up to 2 meters (6 ft. 7 in.) in length and weigh up to 50 kg (105 lbs.) They also have very sharp teeth that can rip through skin easily; however, they are not known to eat humans. However, according to urbanlegends.com, the goliath tiger "has the somewhat singular distinction of being the only African freshwater fish (excluding the Zambezi shark, which is really a saltwater fish) known to attack humans, and there are several recorded incidents from the Congo River."

Dis een ma se vis daai !  Ek het nog nooit een gevang nie maar as hy so aktief is soos die gewone tiertjies wat ons hier kry dan is daardie grote 'n prestasie... bygese as die ou visse nie almal met krukke swem nie ;-)


Ek wil darrem net by se, as die' visse mense sal aanval dan verstaan mens waarom die ouens IN die boot sit ne' :-D

Hi Stones,

I have seen that pic before, it was taken by one of Douglas Danns mates in 2009.

it was 45kg and was taken as a trouphy back to Canada. the standing world record is actually a 56kg taken by a french angler in 1996 at the mouth of the Black River.. unfortunatly there is no picture of this slab of a fish..

Check out Douglas Dann's book on the Goliath, they call them Mbenga here. The biggest one caught is a 64kg specimen.

I've been out twice, only managed to get a baby on that fell off on the second jump. One of the guys working with me got two, both in the 20kg range. I'll try next year to get one.
