Wind on leaders

Hi Guys,

Ive been experimenting with the DIY decron leaders, and have encounterd some problems already,  I've got some 80 pound decron and using #5 wire to pull the tag end through but it get stuck mid way, ive tried coaxing it wit my fingers and moving the decron forward but it doesnt seem to help.

1) is the #5 wire to thick for 80pound decron?

2) How long should the tag end of the decron be when threaded though the wire to prevent it slipping?

Thanks

Chieff the only reason your wire is snagging is because there must be a burr on the metal somewhere, or it is too big to go through... the wire threader I use is rounded... not pointed anywhere or sharp. The legs of the wire threader (both) need to be longer than the Dacron as well.

Try making your threader loop as narrow as possible without making a point in the tip. Otherwise go smaller with the wire.

Enigma and other guys use a proper sewing threader... A Latched Hook that clips closed...

Enigma is trying to source needles for this application. The way I undertsand it is that you insert the nylon into the needle and then you push the neddle into the dacron and then take it out on the other side and their you you have your wind on.

Where did you happen to get the Dacron from, I got some 80Lb from a Durban tackle shop  It get to a point and just not open up enough to allow you to thread the dacron through it's self you are able to make a single splice but not a double splice. Seems they must still be selling it even though I pointed it out to them.

The needles will be on the way now to test the courier service.

For making the loops and stitches you can buy a large eye darning needle from your local sewing supplier. Thread it like cotton and stitch it.

@skippy441 That dacron I am sending you will never give you that problem. If you are still not getting it right then drop us a pm with a landline number and I'll give you a call, maybe it's something small we can do to sort it.

All I can say is practize makes perfeck. I myself struggeld in the beginning but I am getting better over time with making my Wind Ons.

80lb Dacron with Tanaka Splice and then single splice onto the 1.3mm nylon. The Tanaka splice is strong and it is thanks to Enigma that I can do this now.

Check it out under Wind On Leaders under Tackle and Tips

@ Shippy...I had the same problem...i found that as you try to thread it the diametere in the decron changes to a point where u cant seem to thread it...im guesing its woven that way or it could be a flaw....what i do is use my finger nails to grabit at that point while i similtanously pull the threader through...it takes a bit of time but it works out...

on another note some assistance please....once ive made up the wind-on together with the heatshrink while testing i find that due to the strech in the nylon on relaesing tension it bulges up the decron and as you smooth it out the leader slips ever so slightly...I do sand the leader a bit....what am i doing wrong....do i use flouro instead to reduce the stretch. ive been using 1mm on 80lb decron could this be a prblem...
