when to strike?

Hey Guys,

I'm very new to carp fishing as the only form of fishing I am otherwise involved in is game fishing off boats as well as rock & surf.

When carp fishing(and using a 'policeman'), am I supposed to strike when the policeman lifts up/ jumps up, or do I wait for the reel to run before picking up the rod to tighten up? Another question: whats a good all round bait to start with at a small private dam in pta?

Any help would be great!

I normally wait until a run or a back-bite(where the line keeps on going stack).

As for bait at a private dam, try earthworms, maize, plain dough. Molasses and honey mixed with bread as a paste should also work.

I normally wait for a reel run, but sometimes when your line pulls straight for a couple of seconds you can also strike.

You can also strike when your policeman falls into the water, however I lift mine about 5cm to see what is happening first. If it keeps on dropping into the water twice therafter I reel in for about five turns or until I feel the fish and then I strike lightly. If you lifted your policeman the 5cm and nothing happens I normally wait 5 minutes before I rebait.

Completely different on a boat. After settling in and the carp's are there they normally take and run at that time I just give a light jerk and then the sport begins the bigger the fish the less fighting there is. I do not know more than 5 kg. My fighting size is from 1.8 to 2.5kg that is from the boat.

Jip from the boat it is quite different.
My biggest carp from the boat came out of arabie. It was a 6.3kg and it gave me a fight like you will never believe. If you hit a good spot on that dam the average size will be around 3kg.
But there you have to fight the fish a bit other wise you will get tangled in the trees.

Hi, Since i started using Daiichi DH55 hooks for carp i never missed one , I wait for the the policeman to all the way up, and then lightly strike, normally does the trick,

Thank Shimano for baitrunners.

When the reel starts singing I pick the rod up and set the hook very gently. After that I start reeling and the clip snaps over to engage the fight.
