Well done Mr. Pienaar! We saw today a Gar that ran on the water for probably 10 seconds - thought the guy will never stop! Just wish my powerpro was attached to his mouth!

We were near Aliwal Shoal on a prefect day with no wind and huge viz… I could see the Garfish but they were skittish… I was using a bass rod and reel and rigged a small circle hook and small Berkley drop shot fish bait… I made a longish cast away from the action… what an awesome fight!

Okay i admit i cheated a bit got 3gaary's, but had to u small piece'z of fillet and a circal hook... I try'd small spoon's but i think these guy's here are to small to get a proper hook up..

I'l have to hit deeper water if i want a croc on light tackle.

Try using a short section (2") of kevlar assist cord (tied to the back eye of your spoon) that you've teased out so all the fibres are loose. These tangle the teeth and they cannot get off. You miss a coulple but once they're on they stay on. Actually makes releasing them pretty tricky.

If you can't find kevlar assist you could use any type of thin rope that has ultra thin fibres.

Was using this system on a fly rod, no fly just the kevlar assist tied on the end of the leader. They love it.

Just to shed some light, we are talking about two different species of garfish here. The fish Paul caught looks like a tropical garfish (Seychelles, ect) which is turquoise blue in colour and has a larger jaw structure with larger teeth. Furthermore the commonly grow to 6kg. I have hooked many, landed few!

Our east coast garfish is smaller with a thinner jaw structure and smaller teeth, and are silver in colour with distinctive black bands towards their tail.

Caught this beast of a gar in Isle St Marie, Madagascar, best scrap I have ever seen from a gar. He was bright blue and even revved me on my heavier graph-cast 1; pity I took such a terrible photo, check out his power tail.

My best lure for Gar’s is hands down a Hopkins Shorty (best spoon ever made for light tackle next to the slim) ¼, ½, and 1oz spoon with a single 1/0 or 2/0 stainless hook dressed with some white buck tail, retrieved with a fair amount of speed so that it skips on top of the water every now and then.

Gars also love pink squids on a drop shot here in Madagascar.

In Mahajunga in the North of Madagascar I have seen a type of flying Gar, its pectoral fins are similar to a flying fish, but not as large and they really look comical when they come out of the water…. more like an articulated truck with tiny wings.

Had a good joll on Friday last week off the boat throwing towards Durban Bay South Pier throwing 5inch MCcarthy Pearl Olive Minnows for the Garries......Think out of 5 we hooked 3 in the face and the other two were foul hooked along the body.....Good sport none the less
