Thanks for the comments. Yes the venue has great potential. It is about 30 km down from Parys, so is close to Pretoria/Jhb.

I did not have much time to properly check out the bottom structure in the river and I would probably have done better had I done this.

The spots where the baits where dropped where 4-5 m deep.

Would also have helped to catch more muddies(the best big barbel bait in my opinion).

There is a new venue opening up close to this with 1.8km water front and I will be checking this one out for the future. Also has good spots for yellows on light tackle.

The further down river you go the better the chances of catching big barbel. You need more than a weekend for these though, thats why I started scouting a bit closer to home.

For a venue close to Pretoria/Jhb and a quick weekend outing this definately has great potential.

Will post details when I visit again, have to leave over seas on Thursday but will be doing another trip there when I get back mid Febr.

op wat het jy die muddy gevang?

Ek sukkel myself morsdood vang net die hele tyd karp en in die vaal is die heel onder aan my lys vir goeie baber aas

Hi van Straaten

Rooi Kariba wurm met n soet degie bo. Jy kan ook probeer met floaties(die klein sagte enes plain wit of geel) ek dink party ouens noem dit mallows.

Jy is dood reg, muddie is bobaas aas maar jy moet hom eers gevang kry en dis nie altyd maklik in die rivier nie.

As jy stillerige water kan kry(in n "back eddie") of so wat omtrent n meter diep is kan jy n ystervark pen float probeer. Maak so bietjie voerplek met wit voer en rys om hul te lok. Sit n gummie stop op jou lyn dan die ystervarkpen float en heel onder n klein hoekie. Sit n split shot so 100mm bo die hoekie. Skuif nou die gummie stop sodat die ystervark pen 45 grade le in die water.

Helfde van die pen moet onder water wees. As die ystervarkpen plat gaan le of enigsins onder die water in gaan, slaan vinnig vas want die hoek moet in sy bek wees.

Klink altyd makliker as wat dit is om hul te vang, veral in die rivier maar aanhouer wen.

Hoop dit help, sterkte en stywe lyne met die snorre!
