WCSAA League

[/b]Dear Angler

The league can surely pick the most foul conditions to fish under and this past competition was no exception.  We had a barrage of cold fronts hitting the waters in the week preceeding the competition and whilst the external temperatures were not too bad, the water was a completely different story.  The air temperatures hovered between 17 and 23 degrees depending on which part of the mountain or beaches you were at.  A cold north westerly was cutting through the anglers who braved the beaches from Verwoeds to Kleinmond with the latter really looking an ice box.  But hey, this was the season finale and while the championship club designate had a reasonable lead heading into the day, the outcome was not a fait accompli by any stretch of the imagnination and the middle placing still delivered some jostling for the higher placed seedings. The barometric pressure dropped with each passing day leading to the competition and the water temperature went to about 13 degrees on the day at places such as Kleinmond beach.  The water was flat like an typical angler made “flopped” pancake with generally very clear water and the northerly winds meant that the actual mountain area would be the favoured spot for most anglers.

The water colouration was a sea of green with almost none of the colouration that anglers thrive on and as one angler put it, you only required Brooke Shields to walk past as it represented the blue lagoon. Not withstanding the poor conditions on the day, the clubs were again out in force during the season finale.

Saturday 18/04/2009

The teams for the captain’s meeting at the Engen One Stop at 7.45am and was decided to tackle the back area from Gordon’s Bay harbour wall to the Botriver Mouth.  The extreme weather must have put some anglers off as there appeared to be less anglers at the starting blocks.  Driving around the mountain you however saw the strategic spots all well covered with the front sections of the mountain leaving little space for the late comers.

Those who attempted the less comfortable, yet highly productive areas such as Geheime plek, Bell Road and Jok se Baai all in the Hangklip area, also found the going tough with numerous anglers going for broke early on.  These anglers were largely casting into the teeth of the wind and as usual had to contend with the roving kelp and sea sprays.

Even though the front of the mountain area was favoured, most clubs opted to cover as much ground as possible until the fish came on the bite and that see-saw approach is what happened through most of the day.  Tygerberg had an inauspicious start to their day but gathered a nice head of steam to end the season in really good fashion.  Whilst no fish was landed at Geheime Plek, the Thys father and son team set the trend of incurring the wrath of some rather large black pylies which gave them another lesson in just how difficult it is to land this species.  Henning “hitman” Venter surprised by blanking (makes us average anglers at least feel in with a shout lol), but Leon van Dijk contributed with a cowshark and diamond at Geheime Plek. Captain, Jacques de Bod, who seems to be pummelled this season by his young protégé fishing partner, continued the trend.  He ended with a beauty diamond of around 60kg’s, but once again the youngster Micheale Santovito was the star of the show.  With a great work rate and skills to match, the chap was the champion angler for his club (and the league) for the day.  Mick ended with a bronze whaler, a smoothhound and a diamond to fish just under 100 points and crown off a fabulous season for him all at bouy 3.  Gunther “die klipvis” Bothe and Jean van Zyl were the other big contributors by landing great catches of diamond rays in the Boschkloof vacinity.  The club ended the season on a high by taking the honours on the day and with the current trend and focus will be a real handfull in the new season as they have shown to be real challengers for league honours.

This season Four Oceans had another good season with their membership become more proficient in the different facets of competitive angling.  Unfortunately the day did not produce for these boys but with a bit of luck could have been different.  Captain Bienie Hendricks (another great seasonal performance ending 17[suP]th[/suP] overall) and Adiel Behardien were the two anglers who got the biggest hidings on the day from the monsters of the deep, but with a comprehensive off season programme already drawn up and with a bit of better luck next season, they are written off at your peril.

The Police Angling club improved this season again and are starting to show what improved administration, focus and commitment can do for a club.  However, Retief Krige must be feeling the heat as wife and fishing partner Dorianne keeps up the challenge by beating him once again.  T. Norton was their top angler landed two spearnoses at platbankies.  Andre Swanepoel and the snorman Petrus Mongie also chipped in to make the day  a decent one in the conditions.  Police is a club on a mission and looking forward to their challenge for the new season.

Tasmanians opted for the a range of the beaches from Kogelbaai to the Silversands areas.  With the North Westerly making the water more clear, the guys maintained focus and were duly rewarded.  Kariem Fisher and Bieny Alexander added some points but the day was made by Captain Francois Burger landed a beauty of a spotty measuring 1.8m and some smaller fish and thereby also giving the club their first top ten individual finish since joining the league.  As he said, “it was a great learning curve for the guys this season, but we have identified the areas which we need to work on and will do so in the off season”.  With the likes of Francois, Bieny and Oom Mickey Thurgood, the club looks well set for a better season next year.

Goodwood’s had a good season and have shown an improved hunger that no doubt will see them challenging seriously next year for league honours.  On the day,  Nico Hertz caught a spearnose and smoothound, whilst Gordon Smeda following up with a double sized spearnose of around 20 kg’s.  Morne Jordan went for a diamond and was duly rewarded with a nice sized specimen.  The day did not really feature any of their old warhorses, with the exception of salty beard Mark Schep.  Mark blanked on the day, but his most noteworthy achievement was that he was able to secure the league’s top anglers position even after blanking on the day.  What makes his performances this season even more memorable is that he is also the masters champion.  It reminds of the adage that nothing compensates for experience and Mark has certainly proven that is deserves his title of CHAMPION ANGLER for the league 2008/2009.  Well done Mark (Goodwood Angling as well as all the clubs in the league are extremely proud of your performance) and may you be well rested to defend the challenges to your title when the new season starts.

False Bay have been there or there abouts the entire season.  Once again, it looks like a dozen too few members turned up on the day but even so, the club was placed second on the day.  A case again of close but no cigar.  Chris Dell caught a bronzie and smoothound whilst Hendrik Klein caught a diamond and Captain courageous Willie van Heerden adding on with a cow shark of just under 30kgs.  The day was however made by the flat fish with Guys Bishop landing a beauty of 56kg diamond ray.  Delon la Vita then caught a beauty of a spearnose of 61 kg’s whils the thankful Renier Kemp (thankfull that it was’nt any bigger) caught a peach of a black stringray weighing at an absolute 76kg’s.  Another quality performance from a fine outfit, but will have to review the smaller issues that keeps them just shy of why they cannot reach the ultimate goalpost.

Two Oceans has a number of their anglers weighing in fish with Robbie Janse catching a nice sized bronzie of 25kg’s.  The flat fish of captain Steve van der Berg made the day weighing almost 50kg’s with Greg Kellerman not far behind with a diamond a little bit smaller.  Malcolm Paul, Pretty boy Dean Versveld and Kraken Fraser all chip-ped in with some nice smoothounds whilst Sakkie jv Rensurg and Oswin Voget rounded up the points tallying team.  On the day, it was however only good enough to get the third place but overall, the league has again been dominated by the club.  Two Oceans have proven themselves to be a quality outfit with a number of high quality anglers that wants to maintain its domination of the league.  It has now won the WCSAA league for three years in a row and building momentum to maintain their run of form.  Enjoy your reward TWO OCEANS CHAMPIONSHIP CLUB 2008/2009 as this is richly deserved and may you continue to set the benchmark for all other clubs to follow.

Our motto remains to “test the boundaries, as it’s not next to you”, as the preparation, after wrapping up internal club issues will start in earnest with the onslaught for the new season.  We have many highlights for the past season where many clubs and individual members outperformed their personal benchmarks they set at the beginning of the season.  The development, not just in terms of numbers of league anglers, but also their growth and understanding has exponentially increased and bodes well for the future.  To all clubs we remind you of this famous saying:

To dream anything that you want to dream, that is the beauty of the human mind

To do anything that you want to do, that is the strength of the human will

To trust yourself to test your limits;that is the courage to succeed

                                 -Bernard Edmonds-

There was about 40 anglers who weighed in fish out of around 300 anglers.   Fish were  caught during the day  with a total weight of 878kg's.  878kg’s of fish atrocious conditions is a good effort considering all the factors counting against the anglers who showed their true metal under pressure.

We have come to the end of the road for a highly successful WCSAA league season.  The league has grown in popularity over the past couple of years and we thank all those parties and the print and electronic media for their wonderful support in highlighting the league.  The new season will start in the last quarter of 2009 and we hope, apart from the weather conditions, that all clubs build on their successes of the past season.

To the winning club we remind you of Bill Gates famous saying:  “Success is a lousy teacher, it seduces smart people into thinking they cannot lose”, so don’t take your foot off the pedal as once the pinnacle is reached the only way to head is south.  To all the other clubs we remind you of the saying that “There is no progress without some discontent and discomfort and the greatest glory in living, lies not in never falling, but in rising everytime we fall”.  Failures are not something to be avoided. You want to have them happen as quickly as you can so you can make progress rapidly -  Gordon Moore

Enjoy the off season, work hard, attend the clinics offered by a number of top class anglers such as the ESA Pro Stores events, Extreme Africa clinics etc and come back well rested, tackle ready and hold on to those screaming reels.

On behalf of the WCSAA President, Malcolm Paul and his management committee, we also wish to thank the public for their input, assistance and understanding and most importantly to all clubs and anglers for their support and co-operation during the past season.

Please contact me should you require any additional information or have further queries.
