Dear Angler

A stunner, absolutely majestic with a silhouette that makes grown men weak.  No, i’m not talking about Charlize Theron, but rather about Struisbaai in it’s most magnificent beauty.  Retief Kriger was jesting that “The weather God had finally smiled upon us with such a stunning day and given us a refund on the previous two seasons competitions weather” – how correct he was.  Struisbaai showed all the positive signs for producing quantity and quality fish and the questions of over-excuberence definitely enters the head of anglers, but in their hearts they knew that this could be a cracker of an angling day.    There was the mildest of breeze with a great deal of sunshine.  Temperatures for the day varied from 27 degrees to 32 degrees depending on where you were.

Water temperature was around 16.5 degrees to 22 degrees along the coast and many spots looked a good option as the water generally had some great colour from the start of the bricks right along to Brandfontein.  Some chocolate brown areas were identified with kraaines, die brood, vlei se bank and soetwater looking absolutely stunning.  The plaat was flat and formations were not that easy to spot, but still showed some promising signs whilst the areas close to the Mond had some better formations.

Expectations were justifiably high and at the start of the competition, it was going to be even more critical than normal to have picked the best spots.

Saturday 31/01/2009

The teams met for the captain’s meeting at the Nostra at 08.45am with the starting time of 10.00am and lines up at 20.00pm.  This was generally a variation to the normal starting time with expectations of fishing the tides more productively as well as targeting bigger fish that seem to become more prevalent as the tide pushes.  The areas agreed upon would be classification from the Struisbaai Mond right along the coast to die Grafte and Brandfontein. Competition master Dion van Zyl again made reference to the pertinent rules of the competition and the usual but firm reminder of environmental and nature conservation pledge as anglers affiliated to WCSAA.

The field was very spread with about half the anglers covering the beaches from the Plaat to die Mond.  Some of the bigger name anglers went about 10km’s down the beach with their crews searching for the best formations and conditions to optimise their chances.  Others spread along the Plaat area as far as the eye could see.  A drive around the bricks also yielded plenty of anglers with only Argonauta, where it looked like a colourless dam was really devoid of many anglers.  Those who braved the walk to Soetwater and Piet se Huis would soon find out whether the two hour walks were about to pay off.

Goodwood boys and girls were scattered all along the coast with most of the anglers opting for the Plaat area.  A number of diamonds were caught by the likes of Mark ‘salty beard” Schepp, Wade Adams and Tobie van Niekerk. At Deurloop Klip you had Werner Hertz and his newphew Nico, cathcing some nice bronzies and black pylies whilst the statesman Uncle Dennis Nel made light work of landing a lovely raggie at Die Brood.  Lorenzas Bellingan was on the board with a couple of spotties and Martin van Veen managed a good sized duckbill.  Another legend in the form of Roger Topliss managed to land a hammerhead at the Plaat to crown of a good term performance from Goodwood Angling.  The club has put some good processess in place for their away leg league fixtures and with their teams having good strengh of numbers, we can all see what the reall Goodwood angling can do.

The Four Oceans are kicking themselves at their inept display on the day.  The team has put a huge amount of effort in getting themselves up to standard but have poor option taking and some rather lack lustre displays to account for their poor showing.  Captain Bienie Hendricks, who opted to take the walk to Soetwater later in the day, was rewarded with a cow as was his fishing partner, Shahiem Adams.  Angelo Junies also managed to land a diamond at the same spot.  A myriad of undersized cob (about 30 in total was caught) but only one measuring 60cm was caught by Earl Bartnicke.  Two decent sized belman was caught by Ganief Abrahams and Reza Patel, who was on small fish duty for the day, cashed in on the sandies and that pretty much summed up the much maligned display of the team.  Here’s to wishing them well in the last three comp’s of the season.

The Police Angling club, opted for the bricks and the front part of the Plaat.  They were duly rewarded when Ben Steenberg Jnr showed us all why he achieved his junior protea colours (He ended top of his class in the recent under 21 nationals held in Mosselbay) by fishing the Brood with his dad.  Ben landed three fish sporting a duckbill, a black spotty and a handsome raggie.  His father also hooked and landed two spotties.  The ladies (many of them will be fishing the nationals at Struisbaai soon) were put on sandy duty and cashed in big time with about 60 sandies caught.    Oom Jannie Janse, now in his 70’s, was inspirational as he got two diamonds and his partner a dusky shark, whilst my good friend Eben Swanepoel showed that the last time was more than luck by landing plenty of sandies, a blue ray and a diamond.  As usual, Retief Krige was given a hiding by his wife/fishing partner Doriane and Gregg Hammond went home with a nice spectrum of a Hammerhead, blue ray and lots of sandies.  The angler who did it for me was Ian Gillespie as he was less than 100m from me when, after being on a mombakkies with 15 minutes before lines up) he got picked up by a beauty.  Playing the fish brilliantly, the decisive moment was watching Retief trying to land the fish and the gaff opening up.  Retief, even after losing over 30kg is still a huge man and it was a sight to behold him diving on the raggie and with help from his team mates, landing the fish.  Suffice to say, the raggie was released unharmed and now that the adrenalin has worn off, I wonder if Retief would be so dapper to do it again lol.  A great day for the Police angling and hopefully many more to come.

Tasmanians captain lamented the unfortunate situation of not having at his disposal and number of experienced anglers for this competiition. Oom Mickey Thurgood however was on hand and managed a 20kg Diamond, Trevor Pols a 12kg Smoothhound, Karriem Fischer with 8 sandies, Gavin Duxbury a 3kg Smoothhound. Ta-aai, Nini and Sergey got a sandy each. Fahiem caught a galjoen of 1.8kg which will unfortunately not count because it is out of season.  Not too bad considering all the obstacles that the club had to contend with over the weekend, but captain Francious Burger is certainly going to expect more from the boys in the last three competitions of the season.

Oceans 50 had a great turnout from their anglers which in turn converted into better catches compared to the previous Inter-Club, even though most of the catches were sandsharks, except for a blue ray caught by Donovan Alexander and a Dusky Shark caught by Joe Alves.  It was great to see their anglers enjoying themselves in knee deep in the water water as it was quite warm. According to Joe Alves, “As low tide was around midday which allowed us "non sliders" to get to cast where all the rest of the other anglers were casting all day.”  The majority of their catches were made at De Mond. Total fish to come out was 45. Overall this was a good day at the office for Oceans 50 and hopefully the good turnout and fish catch ratio will continue.
Two Oceans came third in this interclub. It is quite a turnaround that they have now lost two competitions in a row and I gather that there will be some harsh words at their next meeting.  This does not mean that the club did not perform well, it only serves to illustrate the extremely high standard the club performance get measured against as well as how well other clubs are starting to fish.  The usual suspects again produced with Robbie “guru” Janse leading the way, more poignant after his mombakkies at the last interclub.  Others like Jerome “trubbers” and Charl Marais all contributed wonderfully with an array of fish including diamonds, hammerheads and bronze whalers.  Team captain, Steve van der Berg, led his team well at Soetwater and made some inroads especially amongst the cowsharks.  The team was widespread to cover as much ground as possible and a number of fine catches were made by the club.  The number of big fish and quantity of medium fish was however not as evident as with some of the other clubs and with less than 50kg’s seperating one and two, the heat is on and it will take big match temperament to ensure that some tongue is cheek words said at the last year end presentation, does not come back to bite them.   .

False Bay made one of the ultimate coup’s of the season by bagging some absolutely magnificent mackeral on ice the evening before the competition.  At bait distribution it was an awesome sight to see just how focussed the guys were with the odd one or two acting like the proverbial seagulls. Pat Clark who had the arduous task of deciphering all the scorecards end up so nackered that only bits and pieces of the catch records could be obtained.  What he could must out was that Captain courageous Willie van Heerden ( I heard some cordial profanity spewed his way at the weigh in as a result of the 10km sojourn he took about 15 of the guys on down the plaat) was vindicated by his searching for the right spot philosophy and ultimately getting his boys onto the fish.

Willie, Radus and Delon La Vita were rewarded with a number of fish including spotties, diamonds, eagle rays and sandies.  Those close to the mouth such as Guy Bishop, Greg Allen and Chris Bester also cashed in on a number of fish including diamonds, hammerheads, sandies and bronze whalers.  Old warhorse, Oom Wilhelm de Jongh and his crew hooked and landed some forty odd cob at Vlei se Bank and a real pity that all but three were size.  The Soetwater crew of Franco Bornmann and the young turks managed to a land about 6 cowsharks amongst them.  All is all a very productive day spread amongst plenty of anglers.  The hard working ethic of the club leadership has been their strength this season and with the current impasse at the top, they are looking more and more like believing in themselves  in their ability to win this league.

Tygerberg, sporting their new fishing shirts, were again showing signs of winning ambitions but unlike previous competitions where they just failed at the final hurdle, this time they came good – oh boy, did they come good.  Henning “hitman” Venter was another one who took the Soetwater walk after hearing about the fish coming out and when he arrived, the fish had gone quite.  Never on to give up, he tried non-stop till he ended the day with 6 cowsharks to reward him with just deserts as almost all landed in the last hour to lines up.  Thys Kemp snr, jnr, Leon van Dijk and some other all landed some nice cowshark with Leon also managing a diamond of just under 50kg.  Dion van Zyl and non related partner Jean van Zyl were however the pair that made this happen on the day.  They also happened to be the only Tygerberg pair at die Mond.

They ended the day with loads of diamonds, duskies, smoothounds and sandies to end with plenty of kg’s between them.  Old warhorse Oom Nols van Zyl (he is the real maccoy van Zyl, sorry to the other van Zyl’s lol) also landed a raggie of 130kg’s as well as a young bronzie about 4km’s down the Plaat.  Then there was the Kraainess crowd with Gunther “klipvis” Bothe landing a raggie of just under 100kg’s as well as a bronzie of 60kg’s, his partner Hennie Vermeulen also cashing in on some fine catches.  Kraainess seem to be beset by the Red Machine and no wonder with Hannes Oosthuizen and Gustav all landing small to medium black pylies.  New recruit Evan Harker, fresh from the South Cape and now residing in magical Cape Town, seized his opportunity by landing a fine raggie of 120kg’s also at the Kraainess.  So, contrary to the name, kraainess actually delivered some fine fish and also dished out its fair share of hidings.  The poor Tygerberg recipient of the “pakslae” van Craig “whooop whooop” van der Poll, who though valiantly tried, failed miserable after a 3hr sojourn with a hooked black pylie.  To add insult to injury, Craig was pulled flat later in the day and the result was unchanged – fish 2 – “whooop whooop” 0000.  Well done Tygerberg on a fine victory at Struisbaai and now you might just have set yourselves up for a tight finish in the competitions ahead.

Our motto remains to “test the boundaries, as it’s not next to you” and a reminder to all our league anglers to constantly innovate.  The Man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win – Roger Bannister

There were about 75% of the anglers who weighed in fish out of around 300 anglers.  Fish that were caught during the day had a total weight of 4.6 tons.  The total catch for the day was fantastic and demonstrated the quality of the field in cashing in when conditions were more desirable.  The day furthermore demonstrates that you have to take your opportunities with both hands when the come along and Tyger “whoop whoop “ berg made the most of their chances when it mattered.   We thank the scorer’s again for their fantastic commitment and effort to get the information out as efficiently and accurately as possible especially considering the sheer volume of cards that they had to process after this competition.

The league league has grown in popularity over the past few years and we thank all those parties and the print and electronic media for their wonderful support in highlighting the league.

We are in the final phase of the league season and whilst some clubs took the opportunity Struisbaai presented, others failed.  The thing about the sport is it’s upredictability and ultimately those who fail to plan, plan to fail.  Over a season, those willing to make the sacrifices will be rewarded and as the final push starts to come, one always realises that it’s never over till the fat lady (or a big fish or two) sings.

Hi cptfly

The bricks is a team used to describe the rocky areas.  These would include everywhere from the "las" i.e. right of the harbour, the "brood" i.e spookdraai to suiderstrand at Agulhas.

Soetwater is easier to walk from Brandfontein side.  Once parked, its +- 1 to 1.5 hour walk to a particular bay.  Conversely, the more popular "Piet se Huisie" is also about an hour walk from the Suiderstrand beach to Soetwater in the Brandfontein direction.  Hope this clarifies and helps.
