Dear Angler
After a week of black south easterly’s, 70km’s per hour winds and some extensive flooding, we feel blessed to have a decent day of fishing on our second league outing of the season. The weather was pleasant with conditions looking decidingly promising in spite of what the black south easter had done to the oceans the past week. Water colouration were available in distinctive clusters and with a light breeze picking up some steam, the high tide expectations were looking like a late afternoon bronzie festival.
There was relatively little wind to speak of and the little that existed swirled around from the south to South East even though it picked up quite a bit as the day wore on. The waters roll was good and with the Spring tide low offering the anglers opportunities to reach some normally off limit spots.
Saturday 15/11/2008
The teams for the captain’s meeting at the Engen One Stop at 7.45am with the starting time of 9.00am and lines up at 17.00pm. The areas agreed upon would be classification A and C thereby including the zones from the Naval Base at Gordon Bay right along the False Bay boundary to Frans se Paal at Sunrise circle. Competition master Dion van Zyl also made reference to the pertinent rules of the competition and the usual but firm reminder of environmental and nature conservation pledge as anglers affiliated to WCSAA.
As usual, the prime spots were quickly inundated with anglers, but strategy for future success can hardly be built on past performance. Those that ventured early onto the reefs at the Strand were rewarded in some way or the other whilst most of the beaches produced almost nothing early on.
Tygerberg had an another inauspicious start to their day with top rated angler Henning Venter being dumped all over the reefs as the fish came out on top. Things did not go much better with most participants watching a variety of TV shows until Hennie Vermeulen came good with a fantastic catch. Hennie’s raggie measured 201cm and weighed in at 140kg’s at the Palletjies. Tygerberg really have their ladies team to thank for some fine catches. Corlia Niemand was again outstanding landing three blue rays between 10kg’s and 15kg’s each and was complimented by Helga Bauermeister with two over 10kg bluerays of her own. Jan Kempen, fishing in his second inter-club caught a good sized raggie at the Blockhuis, Macassar and captain courageous Jacque de Bod managed to land a 37kg bronzie after been given big stick by one of those “hardegat†bronzie’s a little earlier. Kobus Uys, was another one of Tygerberg unlucky guys (and they had quite a number of these anglers) on the day to hook and play these absolute beasts, but the result was once again Fish 20 angler 0. Spare a thought though for Pieter Niemand et al who all seem to get plastered by their better halves and with two competitions already gone, some serious stepping up needs to happen.
The Four Oceans boys again could not shake the monkey on their back fishing these zones and had a disappointing outing. Captain Bienie Hendricks managed to land a decent size bronzie at the Bird Sanctuary and the ever present tweede baai anglers of Riedwaan Abrahams and Ebrahim Davids managed to land a decent cob of around 10kg’s to complete the clubs total points. They will need to step up the pace with the big fish to actively compete and knowing them, this might just have been the kind of wake up call they needed.
The Police Angling club strategically targetted the Strand reefs and Melkbaai areas for flat fish with quite a number of fish being lost. Dorianne Krige lost a raggie at shark rock whilst targetting flat fish and the always pleasant Eben Swanepoel was again unlucky after being smashed by a huge bronze whaler at Strandfontein. The Morlands, with Pa Willie and Andries catching 5 beautiful flat fish to get their point scoring going. Ian Gillespie was the one however who made the club proud as the only one who managed to land his bronzie. Retief Krige (as usual praying that his wife Dorianne does not outpoint him) rounded off the performance with some cob at Eerste Baai. An luke-warm performance for a club that has real ambitions and we are sure they will bounce back quickly. A reminder of the clubs Cob Derby:

Tasmanians opted to split their team with some at the Strand areas and other along the False Bay beaches. Faiek Galant caught a nice duckbill at the Strand and Nezaar Majiet caught some nice sized cob at Palletjies. Bieny Alexander lamented the fact that the team were missing some key members and the strategy of “go big or go homeâ€, in hindsight, was not the most appropriate course of action. As he said, Nezaar caught the fish in the hole we were wading around and a change of strategy and nimbleness to adapt is going to be the key going forward.
False Bay again kept themselves rather subdued by their normally vocal standards but darn are they showing some serious intent this season. Whilst the league can boast many great anglers, sometimes a new angler can hide under the radar, but not if your name is Chris Orffer, who has taken the league by storm. Led under the tutelage of captain Willie van Heerden, this 19 year old landed and released within 20 minutes a 110kg bronze whaler, a mean feat in anybody’s book. He ended his day with over 200kg’s scoring off 3 landed bronzies and with his work ethic (even Maties students have some work ethic lol) some comparisons are already being made to “the machineâ€. The big boys were not to be outdone and Andre Groenewald, one of the most unfortunate anglers last season in term of lost fish, landed a real “hardegat bronzie†of 165kg at Strandfontein that took him over 3 hours to land. Vincent “the tank†Walters caught another beauty bronzie of 110kg at Ellerman se draai and not to be outdone we had Reinhard Vos, Morne Visser and H. Klein all weighing in with bronzies of their own. Further points were garnered by the talented De Jongh family led by old warhorse Willem snr. The family opted to fish the strand area and caught a number of cob in the 5kg range and for good measure threw in about 4 duckbills in the 15kg each range.
Another good performance by an outstanding number of anglers but not quite enough to stop the Two Oceans juggernaught that albeit with a slender margin of just 10kg, still managed to win on the day.
Two Oceans had a couple of guys on the reefs at the Strand and Ashley Campher was on of the few able to land the brutes roaming around. The Mike “the island†Bailey crew’s patience paid off when they all hooked and landed bronze whalers at Maccassar. Dirk Swart was the man of the hour with a bronzie of 102kg, Corr Aggenbag of 60kg’s, “the island†Bailey of 50kg’s and Hooked Rottario of 50kg’s. Keith Ingesund caught two fine specimens weighing in at around 50kg’s each at the Bird sanctuary, whilst further bronze whalers were caught by the highly experienced Tony Sadler and Duane Buckley Fawcett (3 and 2 bronze whalers respectively) at Jean Middlebank. Jerome Trubshaw continued his good start to his season also hooking and landing a 50kg bronze whaler with Shane “submarine†Gomes landing one of 35kg’s. The day however (as usual) belonged to Charl “the machine†Marais who yet again outclassed all others. He ended the day with a raggie of 35kg’s and two fine bronzies one of 102kg’s and one of 160kg’s†to finish top of the leader board.
A very proud captain Steve van der Berg was satified with his charges, but advised his boys (and all anglers in general) to be extremely careful in the water.
“Just a note to all anglers out there, no matter how experienced you are please be careful at the water, there was almost a horrible incident on Saterday where an angler got washed out,we were fortunate to have another angler who cast over him and pulled him in,it could have been so different.[/i][/i]
Please be careful and watch the sea and current at all times, respect the sea for it is hugely unpredictable.â€[/i] [/i]
The moral of this story is not to learn to cast as far as “the island†Bailey, but to watch and enter the water with respect and care as no fish is ever worth a human life.
Two Oceans club has again thrown down the gauntlett as they go in search of winning the leaque for the fourth straight year in a row.
Our motto remains to “test the boundaries, as it’s not next to you†and a reminder to all our league anglers to constantly innovate. The Man who can drive himself further once the effort gets painful is the man who will win – Roger Bannister
On a sad note, we wish Greg Kellerman of Two Oceans and Francois Burger of Tasmanian Angling Clubs a speedy recovery from the accident they were involved in last week outside King Williams Town. The WCSAA would furthermore offer our sincere condolences to the Fuls family and friends on the loss of our fellow angler Dries Fuls who passed away in the same accident – Malcolm Paul (President WCSAA)[/i]
There was about 64 anglers who weighed in fish out of around 290 anglers. Fish that was caught during the day with a total weight of 2.7 tons. Whilst the tonnage was not quite as much as the first competition, it was still a good effort and the league anglers has now produced in excess of 6.4 tons of fish in the first two outings for the season. The scorer again suffered with a plethora of data and we thank him for his stirling work.
