I also use to fish the Vaalriver as a kid and never caught something like that.
I first encountered those buggers at Arabie dam .

And yes the run a line like a 2kg carp.

Checked the web and nothing about the Klip Barber (Rock Barbel) being endangered but they do say it's rare.

Nothing saying that these fish are protected...

I'm planning to go to the same place again end of January, beginning February. :fishn

Rockcatfish or klipbaber (Austroglanis sclateri)

Endemic to the Orange River and widely distributed. In most areas it is uncommon but it appears to be relatively abundant in the Kraai from Mosheshís Ford down to Aliwal. Characterised by four short barbels (all shorter than the head), a strong bony spine in the dorsal fin and a short dorsal fin (less than 10 rays). Attains about 35cm total length. Can be caught on worms and is eaten by local people. Assessments of abundance have been hampered because the species is difficult to collect using normal scientific methods (netting and electrofishing). Presently on the endangered species list as ìdata deficientî so please report any catches (place and date) to Roger Bills and throw the fish back alive
