hey all...
got back from vidal today and have a few intersting stories...
arrived on tues arvi armed with my excellor 8ft medium heavy and my scimatar 6'6 medium rod plus my brand new abu704lx and an array of plastics...now i must tellu i've been amped for this trip for the last 6 months and couldnt wait to hit the ledges....
so tues late arvi , moderate NE blowing, really small swell, low tide at 19'30, ihit the ledges at the bay. i'm using the excellor rod, 8lb fireline, 20lb fluro leader.... first throw, 4 inch chartruse pepper neon, and i'm on... i get the most awesome blue fin kingy right up to the ledge, its practically on the rock, easily about 4 kg's,and the leadersnaps.... naturallyi'm gutted ( excuse the pun )... but i quickly rig up again, another plastic on , 3rd cast, on again... this ones a bus kingy. i saw it take the minnow and he looked easily 10 kg iggie... unfortuantly it was at this moment when my holiday took a down turn...after about 5 minutes tussle ( the reel handles like a dream by the way ), my brand new excellor snaps and i got cut off... i coulnt believe it. i've used this rod once before.. it snapped on the bottom half of the rod, which leads me to believe its a factory default. so when i take it back i hope they replace it. so i lost 2 fish and snapped a rod.... great start.
wednesday morning, at the beach at 4'30, head to the ledges up north with my 6'6. fishing was quite slow. my mate got one small pompano, i got a small blue fin and a nice little yellow tail kingy +- 2kg's...
Thursday NE is howling so hard. we decide to hit the estuary. put one of those spro grubs on. that tail really gives it a nice action. got 3 small yellow tail kingies and an exfolliation on my calves from the wind and sand....
friday morning light south blowing, overcast, small swell and springs.... headed up north again.... first set of ledgesgot a nice size pompano... but then things went really quite.... we fished for about 2 hours with nothing... almost decided to call it a day when i went on with a really good fish... i'm sure it was a kingy. took quite a bit of line, and was an awesome fight on the 6'6. i got it back to the ledge, but then made such a stupid mistake... i coul'dnt get it over the ledge, so i tried to adjust my drag to put a bit more pressure on it, but i must have tightened it a bit much, cause as soon as i did it , fish went on another run, and the leader knot pulled.. am still so bummed about it, but i suppose thats how u learn...
but all in all was a good trip. would of thought there would of been more pompano, but i'm sure they'll start getting thick soon.... will be back again in jan, hopefully get some better luck...
