Van Staden's River Mouth

This Dec 08, I will be at the Van Staden's River mouth for a few days. Has anyone fished there before. If yes, what are your views and tactics? If not, what have you heard?

Hi Clone, Van Staden's is a nice spot. The river is not worth fishing, but the surf can be good. You can expect to catch Kob, White Steenbras, Grunter, Blacktail, Elf and just about anything. I have heard that you can get Bronzies there ( if you into the non-eds ). Also, I have seen a Duckbill come out there. Make sure to bring grapnel sinkers, as the current can be strong sometimes. Fresh Pilchards and Chokka are the best alround baits for this spot. You can also try prawns and white mussel. I'm not an expert, but I think this is decent advice. I'm sure some experts will also give there opinion.

You seem to be quite familiar with the PE area.  Maybe you can help?

I am going on holiday next week and would like to do as much fishing as possible in and around the PE area. What spots do you know of within +-80km of PE that are worth trying? I don't have a boat, so it would have to be either rock or surf.  :fishn

Any help would be appreciated and if ayone else has any suggestions, pleae let me know.

Hi Mark,

Honestly, there are to many places to mention. If you are after edibles then I would suggest Cape Recife, Bluewater Bay or you could even try Brighton Beach. Safety is a concern all over the show, so make sure you dont go alone. For non-eds, I would go to Brighton or Bluewater Bay. But, like I said. There are so many spots and you would have to check wind direction and conditions. As NeilG once said, when the east is blowing go east and when the west is blowing go west. I will pm you my number, so you can call me if you like when you are here and perhaps we can hook up. Other spots a bit further out are Sunday's, Gamtoos, Blue Horizon, Van Stadens or Jbay area. World of possibilities.

Thanks for your help. I live in PE but have never had much luck fishing here. Also don't always have time to drive around looking for spots. 

I used to go down to freeway just off Sidon street in the evenings with a friend and catch elf in the evenings. Was always very successful there. :wfish  But they've piled all the rocks there now making it difficult to fish.

I have fished Van tsadens before and a great spot is if you walk towards the mouth and walk across the to the other side of the mouth walk down towards bushes, think its called the "plantasie" easy to spot

the pe area offer a wide selection for rock and surf anglers..to start with the spot at van stadens..lots of cob and steebras..but you have to read the water,otherwise you will end up catching alot less than the skilled anglers..look for sandbanks behind smaller holes..normally steenbras and cob there..use either chokka/chokka and pilchard combo or prawn for steenbras..some rays and sharks as well,so live mullet is not a bad option cause we have caught some nice leeries in the surf as well early in the mornings..secondly for the rest of the pe region you can fish cape recife..the point,elbow,the beacon area for bronze bream,cracker,cob and elf..on the patti road side you can fish for cob on the surf(just take a fishing partner)..you can also fish the marine drive are including spots like blue hole,schoenmakerskop,kini bay and the seaview and maitlands area..if you can get some nice working water you can get blacktail,galjoen,cracker,elf and cob...gamtoos is a good option as well for cob and steenbras as well as leeries on live bait..some nice raggies,duckbills and bronzies in summertime as well...further to the kabeljous and jeffreys are you can expect the same species as mentioned for gamtoos..further to paradise beach you get small atretches of broken reef..some nice edibles and also poensies in this area..this shoul cover about 80km to that side..from pe side you can fish bluewaterbay for some monster zambesie sharks as well as spotted grunter and cob on the sandbanks,mainly caught on prawn baits..hope this helps

Thanks for the help guys.
Got a few elf at the Pipe at Pollock beach last week.
Also been to the Deal Party Lighthouse. Got some nice kob.... And a LOT of rays. Also some sandshark, barbel and a hammerhead. Was lots of fun!!
Still looking for a few more places though.

I am also looking to arrange a trip to sea for about 6 - 10 guys. If anyone in PE knows of someone who has a boat big enough and has enough gear to take us out between now and the 4th of Jan, please let me know. 083 430 5018
