Does anyone have more info on Vaalkop dam?
Is it safe to camp there these days?
How's the fish?
Wan't to take my buddy and his boy for a nice fishing trip.
Any suggestions? We are from Roodepoort.
Thank you!

Some suggestions:

Wait for warmer weather, like in October onwards, it's not good for winter angling (my own experience but others might differ on this one).  Now that it's at +- 86% full there is very limited camping spots meaning that if you go on a Saturday or Sunday you might find yourself sitting in the bush amongst rocks etc.
No longer safe either, lots of thieving at night, even breaking car windows to get access.  I havent heard of anyone being assaulted yet.
In summer you can catch some nice Carp and Barbel.  Curper are there but I havent seen any decent sizes coming out.

decent barbel to be had at Vaalkop. There are PLENTY!
I've caught 2 over 10kg there from last winter to now. Note that public boats are not allowed but I partake in eco-monitoring trips around the dam to remove nets, assess fish health and do a croc count.

10.44kg

both these barbel caught in the cooler months. If you know how to call barbel you might come right if you can access some reeds. Just mind the crocs :)

Also VERY nice blues in Vaalkop

carp are on the small side and Roodekopjes barbel and carp are bigger on average

I will definitely make a plan to get to Vaalkop in the near future. Would love to get a nice barbel and especially a nice Kurper. Thanks for the reply!

Hi Guys

we are planning a trip to Vaalkop middle Ocktober, been around the site and this post is the latest on this fishing spot, are there anyone else that has been there the last year with any new updates on this place like safety, crocs, hippos, catches

Magalies Water at the dam wall are busy upgrading (putting in new pump station and 2 pipelines) so lots of contractor staff around which adds to the security risk.

I suspect over a normal weekend you might be OK. From what I hear the long weekends and holidays tend to be a problem.

Hi Guys

Thanks for the info, I went to the venue about two weeks ago and saw there was a club comp, so we have now decided to try and fish this venue this coming weekend.

Anyone been here recently? what worked well when targeting carp and are there still croc's and hippos? as I saw a noticed board there that warned one of the hippos and crocs

Crocs (big) and hippo's definitely still around. I shudder when I drive past there and see fisherman and kids in the water.

thanks, does the croc's and hippos come up to the campsite as that could seriously be a huge risk if one is spending the night there, I am sure it will be of no use to put a keepnet out as this could attract the croc's then.

haven't seen hippo's around the camping area, suggest you ask the staff at the gate when you arrive. Crocs different story, could be anywhere.

Hi

So we went to Vaalkop this past weekend and what a blast it was, Safety was not a issue as the park has Rangers that patrol during the night, no sign of any Hippo or croc.

Between the 6 of us we caught about 50 fish ranging between 1kg to 4kg on about 50 to 100 meters

Baits that worked well was only fruiti flavors especially Tuti Fruiti mieies/floaties

I live there. If you stand facing the water and look off to the right you can see some roofs of houses sticking out above the trees. That's Bushwillow Estate where I am
