Vaal Tactics

Heys guys.

I am curious to see your different inputs. I have a place on the vaal river in the North-West. Excuse my spelling, but the area is called Scandenavias Drift. As a previous PE boy, I am slowly converting my saltwater blood into freshwater blood. I have been fishing the area quite a bit lately and have been landing a lot of fish in the 3-4kg range. I am going back now for 2 weeks and really want to land myself something over the 7kg mark.

Now, the river is a slow flowing river and at times the flow is quite a bit stronger. I have been spending days reading up as much as I can on different fresh water fishing websites. The questions I have is, how can you successfully create a feeding area is the water is flowing? I have had most of my success using floats and boilies. Are there any other techniques or methods I should be trying to draw closer to the larger fish? And could you guys recommend some good feed recipes for the area? Well, any advice to help me get closer to the bigger fish will be greatly appreciated.

My late Mom and Dad used to live in Christiana and I found a good tactic for flowing water to fish with a single hook and no sinker. Put your floaties on the hook and cover it with a ground bait about egg size. Cast +/- 10m and leave reel on light drag so fish can run when he picks up the bait of if using centre pin the ratchet is sufficient. I caught a 8kg stroom carp (almost black in colour) using this method on the islands in Christiana.

It always worked for me. Just make sure the rod you use is the last one down stream or you could end up with a major tangle to the other rods.
