Hi guys

So, met up with the family on Sunday afternoon for a braai, somewher along the line some says lets go fishing for the night. Hastily arranged a few items, all my equipments at home, so no dips or floaties or anything.

Luckily, i leave my 12 ft rods at my brothers place, so at least i have rods.

Anyways, we got to the vaal very late, and by now our group has turned into about 15 people, iinc all the kids. Im just too chuffef cos its my 1 n half yr old daughters 1 st trip, n she seemed to like it!

Weather was perfect, fantastic weather during the night. Oddly enough, though, the fishing was very quiet and only picked up after sunrise. We managed to get a few carp, muddies and small yellows on worms, brown bread and mielies.

Lost a few fish though as the water is up, and all the grass in the water for about 10-15m makes landing the fish tougher. In total we got 7 fish, and lost the same number in the snags. We werent casting very far either, max of 50m.

Anyways, i have had a few trips to the vaal now, and night fishing has not been productive for me. Seem to catch far more during the day. Im not a big caster, can maybe get to 80m so i normally fish at around 60 m. Do i need to go deeper at night? Or maybe create a feeding spot?

Any thoughts will be appreciated.

Night fishing after the hours of say 8 or 9PM at the Vaal is usually not too productive for me either. They would usually become more active as the sun is setting, and about an hour or 2 after sunset, but not much activity after that, in my experience. There is of course the occasional take, a little later, so it's not a total waste putting your lines out, coz you never know. I usually settle for mielies, boilies or tigers on the hair for the night time, just in case that new PB decides to show interest, which has happened. Catfish are usually active at night, so I would usually cast out a fish head or Plattie. In the Vaal river, I've found that they're a little more active at night than in the dam, especially the cats. WRT depth/distance, I usually drop a one line deep (150m+) and the other around 80-100m
