Hi Almal ek het die een gevang by Boshkop Vaaldam... Kan eenige iemand vir my se watse Vis dit is????

It is a Rock Catfish "Klip Baber". You don't often catch them in the Vaal Dam but in the River and Grootdraai Dam you catch them alot.

Dit lyk vir my soos n silver baber of n ander naam is n varswater makriel. Ek het nie geweet die vaaldam het van hulle nie.

Silver Catfish AKA Makriel or Butter catfish do not accur in the Vaal system. It is a Rock Catfish, i know them well as i held the Junior SA Record (Open Tackle) for them years ago (think it still stands today).

Vang hulle gereeld by Roodekopjies en Renosterkop.

The ones you catch in Roodekoppies and Renoster Kop are the about mentioned Silver Catfish.

For some who is colour-blind like me it is not always easy seeing the differences... They have a similar profile etc... Added with the fact that most of us haven't caught either of these species...

I agree it is not always easy to identify what species it is if you don't have first hand experiance with them. once i person has caught both these species it is actualy very easy to tell them appart.

You will see the Silver Catfish has a much longer anal fin than the Rock Catfish and the Rock Catfish has the 8th fin near the tail that a Silver Catfish does not have.

Description – Clanwilliam rock-catfish

The Clanwilliam rock-catfish, found only in a few streams in South Africa (4), belongs to the family of Austroglanididae catfishes, which are characterised by their scaleless, elongated bodies (5). The Clanwilliam rock-catfish has a short dorsal fin, preceded by a strong spine, and a strong, serrated spine in the pectoral fins. Four pairs of barbels (fleshy projections used to taste and feel), hang down near the mouth (6).

Hier is n' klipbaber van die Oranjerivier. Die enigste een wat ek al gevang het en hier rond gesien het. Die oukie was gevang in 2009.
