at island shores over the weekend...

fished on the right side the section which is marked with the white painted concrete pipes and braai stands. very few snags

we did catch carp, grassies and muddys

sad the fish were all under 1kg.
i asssume that the larger carp are spawning?

fished around the 50-70m mark tried closer and further with the same results. lots of small fish (even pulling out 2 at a time)

baits used on previous threads and tips posted.
swd, floatie, worms, bread, and most of the popular dips suggested here. just about every thing worked.

the weather was hot and partly cloudy on saturday with some light rain falling ,

the wind and rain on saturday afternoon / evening was terrible with people holding onto poles to secure there tents and gazebos trying.

sunday was windy for most of the day... making fishing quite difficult.

pitty that i couldn'd get any larger fish and that the weather and wind lead to a miserable time at the dam.

ps the wind blew allot of the sand and as a result my reels are sand blasted,
and need a good service because they are full of sand.

my shiny rods and stainless steel rod pod are now matt on the one side.

thanks guys for all the information on the dam.

I have noticed at the VaalDam the bigger fish are more deeper and the only way to get to them is to have a good quality long rod around 12ft or bigger to get your bait far. I am also surprised why its like this at Island Shores because it gets deep quickly you don't really need to wade in.

@azcoza

yes from what i picked up about island shores that on the left hand side the water is shallower that on the right hand side of the dam? from dam contours.
but that on the right hand side there are allot more snags in the water.

how far do you think one should cast to start picking up bigger fish?

and what have your experiences been at island shore?

@Waldok hi on the saturday we probally caught about 20-23 fish
most of that was in the morning

and on sunday about 8-10 becuase of the wind we just packed up and came home.

Hi Delwyn

We were there the longweekend in September. Also caught plenty, but all on the small side.Got Carp and Muddies on virtually everything,SWD,floaties(every flavour),worms, etc.

Saw some nice Carp come out in the 2kg-6kg range, but they were caught by guys using baitboats and canoes going in about 160m-200m.

I caught all the fish between 40m right up to 100m.

@ carp1

just a quick question?
do you think that it was because the carp are spawning?
that we are catching such small fish?

perhaps it will be better in a while when the spawning is over.

u are right i did see 1 nice fish come out and it was also with a canoe that went in.

which is really leaving me to think that i should change my rods and get rods that can cast long distance in future.

also how was the weather and Wind on the weekend that you'll went?

It was very hot with a moderate breeze. The water was still very cold then.Maybe hte size of the fish were a bit smaller because of spawning, but then again,I have caught 5kg Carp before while they were very actively spawning.

Maybe also the type of bait used.Im a firm believer that if you want a BIG Carp, you use a decent size hook and bait.90% of the bigger Carp Ive caught have been on a hook full of plain mielie pips.
