Have not been there for a while but here is what I remember from before. I have only fished the North bank.

At the tip of the arrow 1 close to the mouth is rocks. Have caught some edibles there before including kob and stumpies.
There always seems to be some kob around at Tugela.
Being a river mouth the conditions will constantly change. If the wind is NE then the South bank is normally cleaner water and vise versa for a SE/SW. This time of year depending on amount of rain upland can be frustrating with debris(dead trees etc.) washing down river. This can also make for very dirty water and difficult fishing.

Moving further north away from the mouth is sand stretch. Normally a few holes(last time I was there there was a big hole about a click up from the mouth) and depending on what the outflow from the river is doing, there is normally a nice gully parrallel to the beach on this stretch.

Snapper salmon( zululand/tugela trout) are always present. Small but good to eat and make an excellent slide bait. (looks like a kob but has three prominent teeth like a baby alsation!) Mullets are also available and will not be left alone by the Zambies or kob if around.

Good time to target Big zambies, giant sand shark, diamonds, honeycomb and other flat fish. Shad head or belly for the flatfish over the gully onto the sand banks. Live snapper salmon or big mullet for the Zambies. Slide to the inside edge of the sand bank(sea side of the gully). If you really have the tackle and the guts, then swim a large diamond skate(up to 70 kg!!) for the big Zambies that frequent the area.

Lobotes or triple tail, use a sardine bait or a small live bait. I have only ever caught one on a small sand steenbras as bait but was a good fight.

Conditions permitting it is definitely worth doing a day off-shore for bottoms. Huge 'moff' grunters and many other species. Just stick to bag limits and sizes but definitely worth it.

Last but not the least, be safe, security issues are becoming an increasing problem for us anglers, so fish in a group(somebody needs to stay with the kit when you are moving up and down the beach fighting a big fish) or :uzito protect yourself.

Tugela can produce and at other times eish difficult... Anyway tight lines.

Hey CBruwer.......

Goeie leesstof.

So, groot "throw baits" vir haaie & flattiies of "slide" met dooie of livies sal werk.
