Going to XaiXai for the first time ever from 1st - 5th July, staying at Paradise Magoo. Question, if've got some medium size conas, halco's and some dusters that I'm gonna put out. What are the expert opinions? What depth do you troll at in the area and what speed, where can I find nice riffs to work close to Xai Xai, taking 5 newbies who has never been offshore with me and want to give them a memorable time as well.

Any info much appreciated.

I would skip the conas and pull halos/rapalas and a few halfbeaks on bait swimmers, concentrate around 12-25m deep and around reef is best - you should get some shoal couta, good luck!!

Hi JFE,

I will arrive at EastAfricaSafaris (Paradise View) 4 km south of Magoo on 8 Jul.

I have checked out my sea chart of the area direct east from Magoo location - no obvious reefs in area - 20m at approximately 1 NM due east parrallel with coastline.

Fished off Praia de Xai-Xai in December 2012 - Reef ESE appox 2 NM out - stretch N-S parralell with coastline - avarage 10m - dropoff to 20/30 m both sides.

Did not have any luck with artlure, but made a killing on trolling sardine at idle speed (2 - 3m depth). Also had good action with bait on bottom, but no luck with jigging?

Maybe I still have to learn the trick!

Please keep me posted on your experience, as I will also be "blind" fishing off Magoo.

Enjoy!!

Hi guys- was at EAS in April and going back end of August - travel north to the lighthouse then straight out - had good action with couta and the kabeljou were around. Good facilities and very helpful locals.
