Tongaat Long Beach

Happy New Year Hunters.

I fished at Tongaat Long Beach on Sat all day. Only cayght one small grey shark. Couple of guys fishing far from the mouth got a few shad and yellow bream. They also told me that some big sharks were lost there on Friday. Water was very nice at high tide with there being only a strong inshore south to north side wash at low tide. Although the river mouth was open, midway to backline was clean and we were casting over backline on slide bait. The grey was caught on Cape Mackrel head and belly.

All the best fishing luck for 2007.

Some of our club members have done well at Tongaat outh last week, they got sorted out by blackfins on one day and the next they got a honeycomb ray of 50 odd, and a duckbill of 60 odd kilos.

Fawlty, why do you not consider fishing for a club? You seem to get around a lot....

Howzit Bud.

Have considered it. Just want to find the right one and the right people to do it all with. Everyone seems to have their different oppinions on the various clubs in and around Kzn. Sealine Fishing Club sounds the best. If only we could get The Emp to make a move on it.

If you're interested, I fish for the Hiawatha Angling Club, we fish comoetitively and socially, and we meet at the Paddle Ski Club near North Pier at 19hoo on the first Thursday of every month...ie tomorrow evening. Feel free to come along and have a beer with us -BYO, it's not licenced-and suss things out. We do fish hard during competitions, but we also don't lose too much sleep if we blob. We also arrange away trips to the 'Kei, Zululand and Tugela from time to time...lots of fun.

We are fishing in semi-social/competitive round next weekend between North Pier and Ballito.....you are welcome to fish as a guest and get to know the guys before making a decision.

If you want, you can call me at 082 325 6639...name's John.

I haven't had a look at the weather report yet, but I may end up at Beachwood or maybe Blue Lagoon, looking for an edible.

The club has about thirty members, the subs are R 360 per annum, and like I said we meet on the first Thursday of each month. Next Saturday 13/1/2007 we fish a semi-social compo between North Pier and Boulder Bay at Ballito, we meet at Tackle Centre fishing shop in Old Fort Road at 12.45, and fishing hours are from 14h00 to 19h00, after which we go to the 19 Field Army camp opposite Mc Donalds in Old Fort Road for a dop'n' chop, and to just socialise and have a few beers together. Safe parking, fires provided, and cheap beer.

Let me know via this forum if you're interested...

In order not to offend anyone, let me make the following statement.....The discussion with Fawlty was a one on one, but we do not discourage anyone from applying for membership. There is a vetting process where you are encouraged to fish with the club, so that your abilities and behaviour can be observed. What is more important than sheer talent (although that would be welcome) is a strong sense of commitment to the sport, firstly, and to competitive angling, secondly. My experience has shown that the first requirement is usually no problem, the second often is. Most of us love to fish...that's why we're on this forum. We just like to fish on our terms. A typical scenario is that a person joins the club, and finds that competive fishing is not really for him. We fish all hours, in all weather, during our stipulated competition weekend. If you like to target mainly edibles, or have a mentality that sharks and skates are a waste of time, then perhaps the club scene is not for you. If you don't like being asked to fish at 2'o clock in the morning in winter when it is brass monkeys outside, then perhaps the club scene is not for you. Within a year or six months you become dissatisfied with the club and you pull out. Nobody wins.

On the other hand, if you are willing to make a serious commitment to the sport, if your idea of heaven on earth is getting pulled around a beach by a big fish, if you enjoy the company of like minded people, feel free to come. You will be welcomed, and you will come away a better angler at the end of the day.
