To fish barbless or not to fish barbless

3 Weeks back, my mates and I headed out to Cape Point for a "fun" day of YT fishing. Birds were not as active as normal, however they were around, meaning that the fish were around. There were about 10 boats out compared to the 60 out the weekend before.

We decided to trawl up and down infront of the point - to and from bellows and back. We hit a couple of greedy snoek as well as a couple of nice TY 4-7 Kg's.

My mate, suddenly hooked into a nice YT and about 6 minutes later it gave in and decided to come to the boat. However, he still had about 10 redbulls in him. I took the gaff, went to the side of the boat, lent down and the fish jumped up against the boat and my hand. With the end result of one of the hooks on the x-rap going straight through my finger.

The only problem was, the dam fish was still hooked on the x-rap and the x-rap hooked into my finger. Now, trust me its not fun having a fiest YT flap around with the hook attached to your finger.

My one mate went into shock and didnt know what the hell to do. my other mate was brilliant and saved my finger from being yanked off. He turned the YT upside down, held it tightly against the boat by its gills and cut the x-rap out the fishes mouth.

Challenge no 2: get the hook out my finger.

We yanked and yanked with plyers, did everything with no success. Eveny try to cut a slit into my skin. WOW, human skin is extremely thick and tough ! Anyway, we decided to call it a day. Went all the way back to buffels, loaded the boat and off to Constantia Burg emergency room.

Once arriving at the hospital, 15 minutes later, the doc had cut out the x-rap, I gave him a YT in good gesture and we were off home !!

A good day out and a learning experience for all !

That looks pretty ouch .. !!  i'd say go barbless or replace the trebles with single hooks that are slightly circle and still crush the barb , as long as you got pressure on the fish the barbless should'nt let go.
