The first marlin of the season at Struisbaai was landed today by the anglers aboard the local boat Aqua Tess, skippered by Maans Conradie. The fish, a striped marlin of 2.74m pulled the scales to a whopping 112 kg, making this catch one of the biggest stripey’s ever to be landed at Struisbaai.
This was a first for the anglers aboard the 28 footer, but what made the catch even more remarkable was that this fish was caught the day before the start of the 20100 Two Oceans marlin Tournament, and it was also the only marlin landed on this practice day.
The crew were all elated at their catch – a team effort according to the skipper – and they were loudly cheered by all the other anglers at the skippers briefing that evening.
This marlin heralds the beginning of the marlin season at Struisbaai and everyone is hopeful of a great tournament. This year the prestigious Two Oceans Marlin tournament is in its 5th year and has attracted a record entry of 39 boats from all over the country. With a lot of skipjack tuna and also a few yellowfin tuna landed by other boats, as well as sightings of a few other marlin inspecting the lures, everyone is ready for 4 days of hard fishing.
