Tackle Box Necessities

Well I've just purchase my reel and rod,

I dont have any tackle of my own  and I need to put together a tackle box. I would like my tackle box to cater for rock & surf envirmoments,
Can any of you guys suggest,
1. What necessities are for a saltwater tackle box ?
2. What should one get if the sought after fish are edibles (shad, Salmon, Pompano, Garrick and smaller bait fish) ?
3.I'm also keen to try this drop shot technique

I've come up with the following but dont no the exact specifics,
 A nice sturdy plactic tackle box
 Hooks (not sure what sizes)
 Sinkers (not sure what sizes or types) I will be doing light,medium and heavy fishing
 Saltwater Lures
 White cotton
 Spare line
 Steel wire
 Sharp knife
 Wire Snipers
 Pliers
 Oil for my reel (not sure what kind)
 A Bait cloth.

Thats quite a nice set up you have there, great all rounder combo, well you have listed all the necessities hook and sinker sizes however would depend on what you are targeting. In my box i have hook sizes ranging from no.9 to 10.0 and sinker sizes 3oz to 8oz. an extra knife and roll of bait cotton would be good. i wouldnt recommend drop shot with your set up but great for large edibles.:fishnWhen fishing for larger species you will require leader line pref 0.70 - 1.00 mm.cant seem to recall what else i have at the moment but if i am missing anything im sure it will be covered by other members.

hey Livebait.
everyone has his own idea of the perfect tackle boxs.
Mine aint perfect, but I can tell you whats in mine. Im mostly n sharker, but when I do go fishing I have the following in my box.

#Little bleu box. the one you carry on your back with the little drawers. ( I have the big bleu one, but I carry more stuff than you would need for the edibles)
#Sharp nife. small scissors, tjokka hammer, Knife and hook sharpener.
#toothpicks and sosatie stokkies ( sosatie stokkies to keep my sardien stif when casting a whole pilcher for shad)
#Ghost cacoon and thinest silicon string. ( I use a silicon string that I buy from Benguela in Saldanha, they use it in the clothing industry. very thin and strong. Truely inviseble)
#Sinkers no1 and prefered is the bottle sinker. depending on your rod I would say from 3-5ounce. Breakaways from 3-5 for when the surf build a little and whaeteter grabs for multi purpose, I like to use them on the rock and the surf. also 3-5.
#Hooks a veriaty from no4 - 8/0. ( I use daiitchi. Banded wil do fine for fish)
#red float and kork.
#Mono. -I like to use the cheap spead spin for sinker trace. they seam to break quick when i am stuck in the rocks. atleast I get my rig back. Remember to clip the sinker when you cast a low diametre sinker line, or you might lose more sinkers than you get in the water. I use 0.4-0.45mm for the sinker. - mono for leader I use only maksima ultra grean 0.6mm when angling for fish, rarely 0.65 when targrting muscle kracker in the gullies. - mono and flouro for the bitting trace. 0.35mm for stumpies 0.45 for small cob and steenbras. 0.55 flouro for larger cob and  o.65  flouro for muscle crakker.
#steal I use 30-40LB bleeder wire or carbon couted steel.
#A cloth or old towl.
# a veriaty of  swiwwels.
# a spoon or 2. small and large, maybe a lure aswell.

Cant think of anything els know.

hi Livebait...... as u can see tackle preferences vary from person to person. like the choice of rod.....fished with assasin for years then paid 800 bucks....2 years ago bought myself  a poss...5 as well you will pull  a10kg grey no problem with the light tip.... i throw a 3o/z spoon a mile with a side cast..... the way you will throw a scarborough...light tip  i'm more confident with a 6o/z sinker on my heavy tip....so i recon 2 to3 o/z for the light tip .....4 to 6o/z for the med to heavy tip once again i throw a light sinker  a long way side swipe style .i don't see many anglers throwing this way....much more momentum...compared to a normal over the shoulder throw.... CASTING IS LIKE HITTING A GHOLF BALL......TIMING.

JUST A FEW XTRAS AND OTHER IDEAS FOR YOUR TACKLE COLLECTION

GLUE STICK....TO CHANGE A TIP EYE.....USE LIGHTER......HEAT UP ONLY THE METAL PART OF THE EYE AND SLIDE EYE OFF

MELT GLUE STICK...A FEW DROPS INTO THE HOLLOW OF THE EYE...AND SIMPLY SLIDE EYE BACK ON ENSUREING THAT IT IS LINED UP WITH THE OTHE EYES....4GET ABOUT ANY OTHER METHOD....RE HEAT EYE IF IT IS SKEW AND LINE UP AGAIN

POLYSTYRINE CUPS FROM THE BINS IF U 4GET YOURS AT HOME.....WORKS WELL 4 SARD AND REDEYE BELLY......INFACT MANY OTHER BAITS AS WELL. JUST CUT TO REQUIRED LENGTH.....

Hi Guys, What a response, i already feel like the Sealine family...:bflip
I feel much more cofident of cathing a fish this weekend now.

I have decided on the following for my box for now.It seems the moer you fish the more your box grows in variety.

so here's the list,

A nice sturdy plactic tackle box
 Hooks sizes no.4 to 10
 Sinkers 3oz , 4 0z 5 oz and 6oz x 5of each.

Gentlemen,

Shad spoons eh?? I saw what they look like on Google Images, but tell me, how do you retrieve these buggers?
