Step leader line

I have always fished for carp with 10lb mainline and a 17lb leader but last weekend I tried a 7lb mainline with the same 17lb leader. I noticed that I was getting LESS distance on my casts. Maybe that is because because I was using a spring mielie bomb holder rather than my normal mushroom sinkers. (My mieliebomb was too soft).

Could I increase my casting distance by stepping my leader from 17lb down to maybe a 12lb ? Is it necessary to step between 7lb and 17lb?

Does anyone have any information regarding the correct ratio for stepping leader lines and any further information such as the correct lengths? Your feed back will be greatly appreciated.

Step is not needed in any leader, fish a leader of 6m max.

Compare apples with apples. Using the same tackle, bol and weight, in the same weather conditions you will always outcast 10lbs with 7lbs and always.....WAY...... outcast 7lbs with 5lbs


There are a few rods that require a step down as a result of guide placing and rod action, one is the Tribal LC with large guides.

I use a step down as I fish clear line and a clear leader so I use a 2m high viz yellow between the 2 to track the fish.

In the LC case the step down is to stop the lighter line bunching against the guide in the cast and to prevent the line wrapping on the guides and breaking off and not to make the leader lighter. When your drop for the cast is out all you need is 2 (max 3)turns of line around your reel's spool and then the leader is light enough.

If the rod is fitted with Concept Lo-Rider guides the wrapping is eliminated.

In short we've been using them for 5 years now, especially on high end jigging rods

Imaging throwing an 8oz Plug on 130lbs braid and it wrapping around a guide, unlike 5lbs line it doesn't break the line ot the guide it breaks your R9,000 Carpenter rod.

So they designed a guide to prevent line twist, prevent guide wrap, and reduce friction of the coiling line on guide and blank thereby increasing distance.

I've been building freshwater rods using these guides for 4 years now and Sensation with their Rockets also employ this.

I built Dewalt van der Walt and Jumbo's Tribal LC's with these guides (one original Fuji R540 a set and one Generic R120 a set)

If it gets better distance? Johan Louwies of JL Custom's buys these 150 sets at a time and through testing and practise casting is 100% sure they cast further.

Jumbo recommends these to everyone and not because of distance but because you simply no longer get all those cast off's (not 100% reduction but 95% reduction)
