St Micheals

Hi Guys,

I'm heading up to the St. Micheals area of KZN from the 11th to 15th August. Is there any good spots for shore dives in that area, and what kind of fish can I expect?

Thanks.

Plenty of good shore dive spots along the south coast! especially further north where the waters generally cleaner with numerous points that maintain good fish, especially during this time! But Orange Rocks is your best bet if you're only staying in the St. Mikes area.Very approachable too.About 300m south of the main bathing beach off the bricks that run parallel to the small beach road, not a very productive spot as a lot of the locals dive there and have done some damage, shallow scattered reef with bronzies that usually hang around the white water, but the Garrick should be there now for the sards! I shot them there this time last year so keep a look out.A hard kick out over flat rock and sand about 400m out in about 15m of water will take you to a better reef full of life and various good sized bottoms.

Good Luck!

Yes, it's generally a safe reef to dive. I've never come across any sharks along the stretch. But the sardines have hit the south coast which always attracts them in any depths, so just be alert.

I recommend Ifafa point.About 50km further up north from where you're staying.Hit the N2 toward Durban.Take the Ifafa off ramp.Head right, under the bridge up the hill toward the sea. After the second speed hump just infront of the light house is an easy to dive, promising point where snoek and garrick often swim passed.

Thanks Dan. Will give it a bash, can't wait to try out the Natal Coast...Only ever dived the Garden route and cape area
