I, Coenraad Botha, (age 16) caught this Spotted Grunter on pink prawn in the canals at Marina Martinique just outside Jeffrey’s Bay, late afternoon on 28 December 2012. The fish measured 81 cm’s. The SA record of 9,5 kg's was set in 1944 off the Durban harbour wall. A very light rod an 4 kg line resulted in a 35 minute fight. The fish was released - the whole river literally had to come to a stand-still in order for the passing boats not to run over his line.
The fish was weighed in a towel in order not to injure it (the scale that we have is fairly archaic) – including the towel it weighed in at 8,6 kg’s. Using the length/weight/age chart below to “sanitize†the actual weight (excluding the weight of the towel), the fish is estimated to have weighed just under 8 kg’s and is likely to be around 11 years old.
