Hi gents. I just bought my first spinning set, an azores 55 and okuma pro series 10ft. I've never fished spoons let alone lures. Any advice on what braid and lures I should start with. Bear in mind the limited budget. I love in durban and that's primarily where I plan to fish. What should I try for and what species can I target?

Are you enjoying the Okuma Pro Series? I am thinking of getting one.
I can strongly suggest Grinder braid. The 25 lb (PE1.5)8-weave version. At R399-00 for a 300 m spool it is unbeatable quality for the price.
Lures all depends on the time of the year in Durban and your spots. For example, with the Garrick returning from the north, and the really big shad that should start to make an appearance now, a few 1.5 - 2 oz plugs and stick baits (CID shiver stick, Z'minnow or CID slimbait) are really good lures until end of the year. And a spoon for before sunrise like the CID couta casting no 2 (or magic missile) in pink or green glow or the deadly Chase no 5 spoon for snoek and shad. And then maybe a slow retrieve spoon like the Halco Twisty or ABU Toby for in the daytime hours for shad.
For the Durban area I would honestly not start off with much more than these go to lures. We really over-complicate lure fishing with too many colors and types. Rather start of with a few lures and learn how to fish them properly. With time you can expand your arsenal based on your experiences and the liking you develop for certain lure types.

Sorry for the hijack of this thread, Riekert, from a budget perspective, can you please recommend a decent spinning rod for around R1500 and a reel for also that amount, so total budget around R3k?
Species to target will be Shad, Garrick and Cuta. I assume the rod will have to be balanced to cast lures around 1-3OZ and around 10foot?

Spend more on your reel than your rod..and save cash for line and lures..

Its a bit of both really: I like the versatility of a 1-3oz rod and I do think the 11' casts further. Not that distance is everything, but if you can open up areas with better distances its a win-win.
I have rods from 8' - 12'2" in my spinning arsenal, but 9 times out of 10 if I am fishing KZN rocks and beaches, I use my 11' 1-3.
Your old Stradic should be fine if it has been maintained and is in good working order.
I still own and use a Sustain FB... its over 14 years old now and has been passed on to my son for bait and wait fishing in the surf. It still works 100%.
The only thing I can think of where new is definitely better is the spool lip design.
But for now its will be a-ok.
